Dry food without poultry and rice?

It has taken a couple months but it seems we have gotten Naku's vomiting under control (for the most part). Naku is fed wet in the AM and dry in PM, but his dry food (the only one I have been able to find so far), is TOTW River Canyon River Feline Formula and the main protein is fish based (trout and salmon). I know fish isn't great for kitties, but I am trying to find a dry that is similar in price to TOTW but may have an alternative protein than poultry (due to allergies) that we can give him, so we aren't breaking the bank? We have been on this combination for.. about 2 months now and he has been doing alright with vomiting.

His safe foods (wet): Evo 95% Venison, Nature's Variety Lamb or Rabbit, Before Grain Beef, Weruva Steak Frites, L.I.D. Venison, California Natural Salmon & Sweet Potato

Now we are finding he may also have an allergy to rice? We bought California Natural's Venison and Brown Rice and his vomiting started again. So we nixed that food. We also had some treats that we figured would be okay every now and then that didn't contain poultry - Zuke's Natural Purrz Salmon - and he vomits after those as well. I looked at the ingredients and they contain ground rice. The odd thing is though, he is ok with an occasional hairball treat that doesn't contain rice or ground rice, but does contain rice bran and rice flour.

I am still in the beginning stages of figuring out what works for him and what doesn't, but I don't want to keep giving him dry fish based food, if fish really shouldn't be fed that much. Are there any dry foods that aren't fish based but also don't contain poultry? I have been searching and haven't had much luck yet. Also, does anyone have any experience with a rice allergy?

I'm not sure how helpful this list will be since these brands don't really meet your criteria, but I figured they may be worth mentioning (I know duck is technically poultry but I figured I would put it anyways just in case).

Nature's Variety Prairie - Lamb & Rice (has brown rice though)

Nature's Variety - Rabbit Meal (contains Chicken and Salmon meal as well :s)

Solid Gold - Katz in Flocken (Lamb is the first ingredient but it also contains chicken and brown rice, boy this is frustrating)

Holistic Select - Duck Meal (has brown rice though)

California Natural - Herring & Sweet Potato (smaller fish such as herring and sardines have a lighter heavy metal load than big fish such as Tuna so if your going to feed fish I would choose something like this)

Natural Balance - Duck & Green Pea Limited Ingredients

Simply Nourish - Salmon and Sweet Potato.

Now I haven't looked into any grocery store brands or science diet or royal canin which may have something, but I would be careful choosing those formulas for a permanent food.

A canned food brand that may work for you that you haven't mentioned is Ziwipeak . They have formulas with no poultry and rice such as Venison and Lamb.

I have a cat in a similar condition, we think she's allergic to poultry and is on a hypo diet at the moment that contains zero meat. We are hoping to slowly introduce the allergens to see what she can and can't eat by feeding them in their pure form ( for example, only chicken or only duck). I have noticed myself that when it comes to dry food, the brands are either made using poultry or fish, there aren't very many containing only lamb, rabbit or venison just yet. If your unable to find a dry food that your kitty can eat, then I would say scrap the dry food and just feed wet so she doesn't have to continue to go through all that vomiting. It seems you already have a bunch of foods you can feed her whereas we only have one at the moment :(

Best of Luck!

Thanks! I will definitely look into these formulas and/or brands. Thankfully, for now, my local store has canned wet for a decent price right now, so I stocked up.

I also grabbed some Proviable DC based on reading other posts, to give to him after vomiting bouts.

Wow, poor Naku!

I can imagine that a rice allergy would limit your choices, but a poultry allergy really makes it difficult.

Glad he likes venison and beef!

I'm new here, so I hope I am allowed to mention the name of a website - if not, someone let me know and I'll delete it.

I just found and ordered from PetFoodDirect. They have MANY brands of foods - I'm certain that you can find some more options there.

I hope Naku will continue to do well

Sounds like a real dilemma... So sorry you and Naku are going through all of this.  I would try to find a grain free product with maybe a venison or fish or mix of the 2 proteins.  I did a real quick search and came up with one that might be of interest to you http://tasteofthewildpetfood.com/products/cats/dry_food/rocky_mountain_feline_formula/ since you are already using this brand.  Best of luck to you and Naku !!!
Thanks NutroMike! Unfortunately, this blend includes chicken meal and chicken fat.

Thanks! I have done some of my food hunting on there which has been helpful since they include ingredients without me having to open a ton of sites. Poultry allergy is definitely making it very difficult! So he is getting a mixture of venison, lamb, rabbit, and beef. On one of the sites though, they had beaver which I thought was pretty interesting. Not sure how much a cat would like beaver tho.

I was reading up on it and it's not for daily feeding. Its gotten good reviews tho (mostly for dogs .. they advertise for cats and dogs)

I think I'll pass on this protein..
