Hi, I took my kitty in for a dental today and she needed an extraction.  She seems to be doing well,....drowsy (a couple times, her legs seemed to give out when she was walking), but she is exploring everything and seems to be slowly getting back to normal.  My vet said, however, that the extracted tooth had 3 roots and that one of the roots broke off and was left behind; they weren't able to get it out.  He said the plan is to just keep an eye on it.  Has anyone had any experiences with a root being left behind and know any potential complications from this?  I am going to ask the vet more about it next week when he checks her mouth, but thought I'd see if this has happened to anyone else

I urge you to make an appointment with a board certified veterinary dentist as soon as possible for advice.

You need to find out if there is a chance that root can become infected or cause some other kind of problem.

Normally the roots of broken teeth do become infected and from experience I can tell you that such infections are tremendously painful. But I don't know if this possibility would apply to that particular root as well. The veterinary dentist will be able to tell you that and everything else you need to know.

:yeah: Oh, this is not good.... That root needs to come out.... I am sorry to say that but by me experience, that is the case.... This is why dentals in cats should be performed by vets with experience in CAT dentals mainly or dentists IMHO.... their roots are very brittle, and they do break off..... if left inside you can end up with major problems. If this was a tiny fragment, there was a chance of this fragment getting absorbed..... But a root, or large fragments and you are looking into trouble.
Please, go to a dentist.... :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:
