Hi all My cat Simba has did a poo.  1st one in 8 days? i think it may have something to do with his kitty litter box.  I was teaching him to poo in the bath with not much kitty litter as it stinks. but i was getting concerned as he did do a poo for at least a week so i put his box back in the bath room and he used it.  He did do a poo in the bath but it was very hard for him to push out.  Any way he seems ok to me now.

Why do thay meoow when he sees me? is he being affectionate???????????

Hi.  This is a good question to ask in our Health Forum: http://www.thecatsite.com/f/4/cat-health

It sounds like your kitty is constipated.  I would bring them to a vet for a check soon.  We can't tell you for certain on here; but that is what it sounds like to me.  I have had to go through this with a kitty.  It's probably painful for him and needs to be checked out.  Also make sure he has plenty of fresh, clean water available.  That could contribute to it.  But please, take him to a vet.  He might need medication to get things going again.  I went through this with one cat myself.

Your question about meowing; he could be saying hi.  Some cats are very talkative.  If it's just a regular meow that is my bet.  But if its a "growl" or "cry" sound he could be asking for some space.  Its hard to say sometimes without seeing/hearing it myself.  This is a good question to ask in the behavior section too.

I think you may be right with meow thing" him saying hello"  he definately does it when he sees me and then lays next to me where ever i am.  but he doesn't want me to pat him.  Hes very content just lyaing near me?

About the vet thing with the constipation, Ill try and get some oil, olive or caster oil,(just a little) into him,  Ill put it on his fur and he can lick it off.

hopefully that will help him.

Do I understand that you keep the litter box in the bathroom because the litter itself smells bad?  As in it's perfumy?  If it smells bad to you, it might smell bad to your kitty too!  OR, I could be misreading your thread!  But, there are all kinds of different litters out there to try.  How old is your kitty?  Is he a kitten, or a cat?  Whatever his age, 8 days seems way too long to go between poops!  If he IS constipated, you could try adding some pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling, but just plain canned pumpkin) too his food (some cats love it, some don'), or you could also give him a little but of butter.

Hi guys, just an update on my new 12 mth old cat Simba.  He hasn't done a poo for 3/4 days now so i better take him to the vet?

I have had him for about 1 mth and i reckon ive cleaned up about 4 poos in the whole time ive' had him so ill investegate.  I think hes becomeing very fussy as he's gone of his food, unless we feed him bbq chicken and hand feed it to him.  He looks very healthy and he still wants to play and be active? He is desprate to get out side.  I have even put him on a runner to help sooth his desires?  i watch him constintly so i know hes not going to the loo out their.  I don't think the vet will help because he'll probably just say feed him more raw meat or wet food, but the cat gets wet and dry food every day?  I can't afford exray or any thing evasive so i hope thats not going to be and issue other wise ill have to find him a good home/ someone with money?.  I do hope i can keep him but i wont risk his life because of my financal state.  I think hes a good cat, Ill keep you posted on the vet thing.  Thankyou for all your advice, and i will try the pumkin thing. Australia doest have canned pumpkin? looks like il b cooking some?

Ok took simba to the vet he asked what was wrong with this cat as he looks great?  i said he doesn't poo?,  He said yes he does?  Not at my house i said and then we discussed how a cat should average 3 time every 2 days.  I said not at my house? well hes doing them somewhere?  their are no poos at my house ive checked a couple of times in all locations posible? this cat is in fine health. Just not a pooper.  vet said he has no poo inside him?  Im to feed him only a very small anount of dry food in the morning 20g and 1 to 2 chincken necks at night> keep him hungry he said so thts what ill do>  Told you he's not a poooer? i know that sounds odd even to the vet, but i have not found a thing anywhere" and id smell them too"  Unless hes using the toilet? AND FLUSHING, hes not as regular as most cat.  This is not a problem unless he starts to look ill, which he said isn't at the moment.  Any way Cat lovers im off to pett simba and maybe even look for a poo or too? which i dought ill find.  Cheers and thanks for your advice>

I would not give grass, why not try a little 1/2 tsp of 100% Pure Pumpkin. Not the pie filling, but you will find it in the baking aisle next to the pie filling. Or talk to your vet.

Hello - I did read your other threads. I will ask a moderator to combine your threads because they are all relating to your kitty being constipated and it will get confusing with three threads going at the same time. Hope you don't mind.

I do not agree with your vet saying to withhold food - I do not understand why a vet would say to "keep him hungry" if he is constipated. That does not make any sense. Please do keep feeding your cat - regular cat food. The chicken necks are not cat food and have hardly any meat on them - mostly bones which are good for cleaning teeth.

Your cat needs at least 250 calories of cat food per day. If you kitty is so severely constipated - take your cat to a different vet. I would not go back to a vet who told me to not feed my cat much food. :(.

Try offering 1 tsp. of canned plain pumpkin twice a day. Also if you are feeding chicken necks as a meal - that could be why your cat is so constipated - too many bones. The kitty should only really get a chicken neck once or twice weekly. Not everyday as a meal!!!!! Please feed your kitty. I would also keep the litter box filled at least three inches with litter. It sounds like you don't have enough litter in the litter box for this kitty to make it comfortable for him to use it. At least three inches of litter. Please keep us posted on how your kitty is doing. I would recommend going to another vet right away. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

thankyou for your reply,  I can't afford another vet.  Ill do my best with the cat and his litter box is 3in deep with kitty litter?  Im not sure why he doesn't poo.  Its only been 2hrs since i removed his food like i was instructed to do by the vet, befor then that cat go kangaroo mince 80gr or sachet of wet food every night and sometime even the mornings id give him more wet food as he wasn't eating the dry biscuit i left out.  but i was told that was too much food so only feed him Dry food all day, 30gr wet food morning and night?  thankyou for you advice but ill just see how the cat handles the vets instuctions and ill go from their.  Ill give the cat 1 week on this trial>...Thankyou

Well, donnasimba, if I heard that from a Vet, I'd go looking for a competent Veterinarian! "Keep him hungry"? Pleeeeeease!

Just on that score, cats are "built" to eat many small meals throughout a day.

Also, some cats are prone to constipation issues.

Generally, for things to be working properly in a cat's gut, several ingredients are needed: appropriate amounts of species-appropriate protein and fat, water and fiber (fibre if you're in AU...I noticed the kangeroo bit
)

.I noticed that you asked about grass - yep! you certainly can (perhaps should!) allow Simba to have grass, especially if "he loves eating it".

If you want to find out about preventing constipation in cats....and, if you're prepared to read up on it....there's a wonderful site that will teach you everything you need to know. It's easy reading...if you think there's too much there, just try "chewing off" a little every day until you digest it all
. At the tail end, there's a piece about what to do when all else fails...that is, how to manage chronically constipated cats with "osmotic laxatives". Better, though, to make sure you have all your other ducks in a row before going there.

Then, when you get Simba regulated, pass the link along to that
"Vet".

Here you go http://www.felineconstipation.org/prevention.html .......Oh, make sure you CLICK ON THE GRASS!

You are so welcome - just trying to understand and help you help your cat. :) So are you leaving dry food out all day long? If you are leaving out dry food.... Then the 30 grams ( 1 ounce)of canned food twice daily is good. Over feeding would not cause constipation and I don't think you are over feeding your cat. Can you get the "plain canned pumpkin"? http://www.verybestbaking.com/Libbys/Products/PurePumpkin15oz.aspx You could also get Slippery Elm - in the capsule form http://www.vitacost.com/Natures-Way-Slippery-Elm-Bark It does have a smell to it - so you might have to "pill" your kitty. 1/2 capsule twice daily.

Yes - keep the litter box scooped, clean and about two to three inches deep. Maybe offer two litter boxes. Some cats like to pee in one box and poop in another box. Please keep us posted :hugs: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

I've found that feeding more than the 2 or 3 chicken necks per week creates constipation.  I made that mistake many years ago with my first cat, and watched my poor little girl have awful trouble pooing. As Feralvr said, they are mostly used for teeth cleaning.

And thanks everyone for the pumpkin hint.. my boy and girl have absolutely no problem in the bowel department, but it's a good one to know.

Also, kitten-litter wise... I use crystal litter and clean out at least daily and there's no smell issue.  It's important they have enough litter to have a good old dig around in.

If it's clean there isn't a wee smell...   Just a really tiny bit of soiled litter will be enough for him to smell.  Personally I'd stop trying to teach him to use the bath until this problem is sorted out, and since I'd prefer my cats pee rather than poo in it I'd simply keep the tray clean.

Hi all and thanks for all your help and advice, and moving my threads when there ment to be elsewhere????????I did say i was new i hope you don't mind.  I got news i went to the vet which iv'e mentioned already but i can't find the tread, and he said the cat is fine.  accourding to some of the viewers they didn't agree with my vet.  I take there coments onbord as well and im greatful for there advice.  good news is Simba did a poo this morning.  Ill keep you posted on the next one. hope it comes sooner then later?, And im feeding him Raw chicken drumsticks and dry food.  Ill get some pumpkin and see if that gets him moving.  What i have noticed is that the cat doesn't seem to drink?  I can't really measure the water bowl but hes never goes near it.  I have 3, 1 in the laundry in a clear litter bowl fresh. 1 next to his dry biscuit in the same little bowl side by side, and one in the bathroom with his chicken.  Maybe thats why he's constipated because he does't drink.  Any way ill keep my eye on him.  Thank you all you have been very reasuring and helpfull.  I hope all the people that have help me read this thread.  Ill keep you posted.  Cheers Donna
