Opinion on FRESHPET Cat food

Hello!

I'm looking on some feedback for Freshpet Cat Food. I've not been able to find a lot about it on the web and hope that some of you may have some experience, good or bad.

I have never bought the cat food, only the dog food rolls. The dogs really like it and the cats like to get a few bites, too. And the ingredients are good.

Hi . Have tried it on my old dog, Wilbur. He hated it and wouldn't touch it. Have not tried it on my cat's. Sorry can't say much more than that. It did smell a bit off to me :lol3:

Liz, I've been feeding my cat (Bali) Freshpet Select Roasted Meals twice a day, and he absolutely gobbles it up! This came as a huge surprise as we've tried just about everything in the pet food aisle. Bali is super picky and usually does a couple of laps around the food if he doesn't like it.

I like that it is all natural and has no preservatives. My suggestion...try it out. If it has the same results it had on Bali you will have one happy kitty!

Thanks so much for that! I actually have a gaggle of cats, nine, and finding a great food that ALL of them will eat is rather frustrating.

I just looked up the food, as it's carried in a local supermarket (they didn't have the cat food though, just the dog food). So odd.... it has spinach (which can be a problem for cats that have issues with a tendency to create calcium oxalate crystals), and the first listed supplements is beta carotene. At least it does have Vitamin A in it. But cats lack the digestive enzymes necessary to convert beta carotene into Vitamin A - so why even add it? :dk:

A lot of raw food companies add carrots and spinach (though FreshPet is cooked, not raw). So weird!

I'm surprised not to find more info about this food. I came here to see what everyone thinks about it but it seems unknown or unpopular.

I got a bag of the Vital complete meal pellets this week. The girls at the store, without any prompting, reassured me that I could bring it back even if it was opened, which almost made me leave it there to begin with. If they are getting a lot of returns, that doesn't bode well. But I bought it anyway, mainly because it was such a pleasure to read a short ingredient list where I could recognize every single word.

Lo and behold, the cats love it. I am using it for their snack - one tablespoon each if they whine after their two proper feedings - and they snorfed it right up. They get one dry meal of Wysong's Epigen 90, and one wet meal of either Weruva or Natural Balance chicken flavor.

I was happily surprised how they like the FreshPet. They usually do not easily accept new foods. The FreshPet is on the expensive side - $7.99 for a 1 lb bag - but I like that it is available locally if needed, and I am going to keep it in the rotation to serve occasionally. You're supposed to use the opened bag within a week, so I opted to freeze it. I spread the pellets on a parchment paper-lined tray and froze them that way so they wouldn't freeze into one big clump, and I'm keeping them in the freezer.

I see that some experts find some of the ingredients like spinach and carrots to be problematic, so I will try to educate myself more, but overall, I thought this food was a pretty good choice for us. 

I just recently purchased the Fresh Pet Select Roasted Chicken Recipe with Carrots and Spinach meal. My 2 adult cats and Kitten at first did not like it. Then it dawned on me that I must heat it up a little bit because my babies are not accustomed to eating refrigerated cold cat food. Canned and dry food is (usually) at room temperature so I had to make it feel the same way they are used to eating food. Slightly heating up their food worked out for the best and they LOVE IT! Now I can feel good about what I feed my little babies! I'm not paid by this company to leave this posting but I would LOVE to become a spokesman for the brand! Lastly My oldest cat, Molly has had emotional issues since she was a baby kitten. Since feeding her this new food she has become more of a part of the family and more socialable. My fiancé and I are both convinced the big change in her behavior began when we began feeding this brand to her. Never turning back to other brands! Cheers to this product especially for changing my Molly into the happy and healthy cat she has always wanted to be!

I bought Fresh Pet as a snack once. My kitty ate it, but it was rather expensive so I eventually just gave snacks of wet food or table scrap meats. I do remember it is somewhat lower in calories. I thought that it might be a good tool to transition dry food addicts since it has a moist texture, but other than that it is kinda expensive.

Tbh, I didn't know it came as cat food. I thought it was a dog only product. Lol! I've used it for YEARS with my dogs and everyone has always loved it. I also freeze mine and have kept them for months this way with no issues since I'd buy the biggest rolls to get the best value and then cut them into tiny pieces and put them in sandwich bags for training treats or meal toppers. Guess I just never paid attention to it for the kitties since I only just got back into keeping cats this year and in that time, haven't looked at the product because my only dog (now) can't have them.

I recently purchased the roasted chicken Freshpet cat food.  Both of the cats liked it immediately and gobbled it up. however the 3rd day my female cat decided she didn't like it.  the male loves it.   I am going to try to keep feeding it to her with just a little dry food back up to see if she takes to it again.  I will try heating it up as one suggested.  I like the ingredients compared to so many others.  Freshpet's "compare" feature on their website indicates it does have some of the best ingredients.  Another thing I have noticed is that there seems to be a lot less bad cat box odor with this food compared to that when fed canned food. Has anyone else noticed this?

Have any cats that have that have been eating Fresh Pet for a while, experienced any medical problems that can be linked to the food?

Just bought a bag of Freshpet for my 3 cats, as one of my cats hasn't been eating much for the past couple of days.  They all love it, it's the biggest meal

my little guy has eaten in the past few days.  He gobbled it up.

FWIW, our kittens had a very severe reaction when we tried freshpet, the worst they've had to any food. There were some other possible contributing factors (we were transitioning them out of a poor previous living situation, we were new to raw feeding and cat care in general).

That being said, the ingredients look great, it's very easy to serve (the pellets are small and thaw quick), and, at least around here, seems to be widely available (Whole Foods and Petco both carry it).

I've tried every kind of moist cat food to suppliment my cat's dry food and Fresh Pet is the only one she'll touch. She's very picky and doesn't even like cooked chicken and I'm hesitant to give her very much cooked fish, what with all the contaminants in it these days. She's a long hair cat so needs a bit of wet food to combat hairballs and keep her coat healthy.

to me it's not a good brand. Either their food has fish in it (shouldn't feed a cat fish every day) or it has carrageenan. But if you want to feed your cat this stuff that's your decision.

Another thing that bothers me is their labels/titles are a little deceptive. When I read a food that's called chicken & beef or chicken, I don't expect to find any fish in it. They throw in fish under the radar.

I agree about the fish as well as all the pea ingredients: I wouldn't want to feed either unless, say, I had super-picky cats who would otherwise only eat dry food!

Just to say that my picky cat wouldn't touch it to even try it.

I find it funny that you didnt have any problems when you heated it up.  Everytime i put the food in the microwave to heat it started flashing. Meaning too much metal in the cat food.  So are they shards of Metal in this food. How sad i will not by this . ill buy real chicken and cook it myself. 

I feed the Freshpet logs as part of a rotation diet all six of my cats love it. It's not something I would give them every day. I like to give them a variety of different brands/protiens so they don't get hooked on one food. Haven't had any problems with it.
