I'm guessing when I took Ella to be spayed a little over a week ago she brought home a virus with her because all the kitties came down with watery eyes and sneezing. Most everyone it has been minor but poor Panda and Chip are completely miserable. Panda goes into sneezing attacks where I swear he sneezes at least 20 times in a row, and he is being more clingy than usual. Little Chip is even worse he is so congested you can hear him breathing without having to be right next to him, and his poor little eyes are so watery and one is red and irritated, he barely opens them they bother him so much. I have both on clavamox and Chip gets teramycin in his eyes but both seem to be struggling to get past this. The others have already started getting better or are already better. Oh and I am giving them l-lysine as well. My sweet boys need some get well vibes.

I am sending you lots of love and praying to Archangel Raphael ( the Angel of healing) to make your precious babies well again, God Bless and keep them safe, from someone who took her precious baby to the vet, was given a tablet which was supposed to make her better but caused her to die in the most awful way, I know in my heart that she was poorly but she was improving until she was given this medication, no point in saying anything to the vets, if it was her time, it was her time, it has, however, left me wondering about the safety of pets when taken to vets, I guess it is like us going to the docs and someone sat next to us sneezing and coughing all over us then we get the flu, I just hope your babies soon get well and my thoughts and prayers are with you, kind regards, Cheryl

One of the first words they teach you in nursing school is "nosocomial."  A nosocomial infection is one acquired in the hospital itself.  Not too surprising; that's where all the sick people are!

We are well aware that no matter what we do, the combination of crowding, stress, and high turnover will result in virtually every cat that comes into the shelter catching a URI.  In fact, we have rules that no cat can go out for spay/neuter or other medical procedures, nor can they be transferred to the Dallas SPCA, until they have been in our shelter for 3 weeks.

I don't think it's possible for your vet to keep his office clean enough that some of those infections won't spread around.

So sorry this happened.  Best of luck to your babies and sending vibes

Interest word mrblanch and thanks for the info.  I have to agree that keeping the vet's office clean enough to ward off some infections is practically impossible.  I know that the Banfield vets at the local Petsmart stores ask people not to put their young dogs and/or cats on the floor due to the spread of infections and diseases.  Because the front of the practice is actually located in an area where a lot of retail traffic is directed, a LOT of animals pass through, back and forth.  I suspect many of our human hospitals have the same issues on a different scale.

I know its not the vets fault, but I suspect that is where this virus was picked up at. Panda seems to be feeling better today, a lot less sneezing, maybe every once in a while. I am thankful for that, he is a big snuggler and would want to cuddle but then sneeze in my face which did not make me very happy. Chip still feels bad, but his eye is improving, poor thing sounds awful with how congested he is, hopefully he will be feeling better here soon too. He seemed to get a little relief when I locked him in the bathroom with me yesterday to take a shower so I will try that again with him today.

I have a good trick for bad congestion that seems to work pretty well. What you do is to get a hot steam vaporizer (can be bought for about $15 at Walgreens or Walmart) and some Vicks Vapor Drops. The drops go in the water in the vaporizer. Then you put the sick kitty in a carrier or cage under a table with the vaporizer about 3 feet away. Cover the table with a sheet to create a tent. That way the vapors will go straight into the carrier where the kitty is and help open his congested nose. Leave him there for about half and hour as often as you think it's needed. If the kitty is okay there is no harm to leave him there longer just keep a close eye on him to make sure that not too much hot steam is coming right at him. The table shouldn't be completely covered. There has to be some space for the steam to escape. If the cat will accept it you can also leave him in the bathroom or another small room with the vaporizer over night. If they are really sick they usually don't care that they are shut in the bathroom.

The steam and the menthol from the drops really works wonder for URI cats. I've had cats be completely miserable and not willing to eat that will start eating after some stream treatment. You can also use children's nose drops, like Lil' Noses, to clear out mucus from the nose.

Good luck! Your babies will feel better soon.

I didn't think about pulling the vaporizer out, I actually forgot I had one until you mentioned it. I bought it a while ago when I had a group of sick kittens with URI's and it helped them, but I only ran it with them in the bathroom because that is where they stayed away from my healthy cats. I guess I put it in the closet and forgot about it. I will have to try tenting it in the morning. For tonight I'm sure Chip will have no problem staying in the bathroom overnight the poor little guy just does not feel good at all. I did find lil noses drops that I had with my rescue kitten stuff, but he freaks out with that so I have just left it alone.

I was going to suggest the vaporizer too. Also if you don't have one you can run very hot water in your shower and keep the bathroom door closed and have cuddle time with kitty for about 30mins. I have done this just sat on the floor next to the shower and cuddled with my babies. I also have a small bowl of warm water and cotten balls and use that time to clean their nose and eyes of any accumulated gunk.
