Hi,

Our beloved Stan (domestic shorthaired tabby, male) was recently injured (we don't know how), and sustained an injury at the base of his tail.

A veterinary x-ray showed there was no skeletal injury, but a lack of passing of urine or faeces showed there may be nerve damage and the prognosis was that if he did not recover enough to control his own bowel movements, he may have to be "put to sleep" or at best he may recover, but may have to have his tail amputated.

We are now four days after the injury, and thankfully, he has started to pass urine and faeces so we are quite hopeful of a full recovery.

However, his tail is showing no signs of self control; the veterinary surgeon says it may take up to six weeks to recover, after which, if there is no improvement, amputation may be unavoidable.

I am sure he is going to be okay but my wife and I are still very concerned, so my question is,

Has anyone any experience of this situation and what were the results??

Many Thanks...............Brian

hmmm. I have not had any experience with this, but I know there are folks here who have had to deal with tails being amputated, if it comes to that.

So glad your beloved Stan seems to be on the road to recovery (at least with his bladder and bowels).   I guess at this point it is "just wait and see" and hope for the best

Maybe you should repost your thread and title it slightly different in order to get some responses?  Are you interested in answers about amputation, if that becomes necessary, or exactly what?  If it's the amputation issues, maybe put "tail amputation questions" as your thread title.  If it's something different, perhaps be more specific in your thread title....it seems specific, but maybe not specific enough
.  Maybe you could say something like "lower back injury or spinal injury rather than tail?  Than just cut and paste your original post?

Hi, my friend has 2 cats who have unfortunately lost their tails and was similar situation, was a few weeks before the vet could conclude that the tail was effectively "dead". The cats are now fine and once their tails were removed they recovered quite quickly. It seemed that the tails were hindering them when they were useless. As for the toileting issues she had a problem with one of them after the initial injury, the vet said caused by internal trauma,he did settle down and recover full control in a bout 3 weeks. Both cats are doing brilliantly.x
