My kitten is about seven-months old, and I think yesterday morning she went into heat for the first time. I'm not quite sure what has been up with her. We gave her some cat nip for the first time yesterday, so I just assumed she was being more vocal and playful because of that. But last night, she was putting her butt up in the air, and stretching out her back. Everytime you say 'Poe!' she'll do this weird trill thing and put her back up. She just seems miserable, and doesn't even know what to do with herself. We made an appointment with the vet to get her spayed on the 7th, so she won't have to be like this for long. I was just wondering what we could do to make her feel more comfortable before and after she gets spayed. Also, I'd like to know what I can expect change-wise in mood and behavior directly after she gets spayed. I don't want her to lose her playful and bouncy nature, because I've heard that after you spay a cat, they're much more mellow and lazy.

She should stop calling in a very few days, and I suspect it's more painful for you than her while she is.

Once she is spayed she shouldn't have any discomfort if it's skillfully done.  My girl bounced out of her carrier, did the wall of death round the house with her brother, stuffed her face and then slept.  She had a tiny incision (1/2") on her flank and dissolving subcutaneous stiches.

Ha ha, well my Cinnamon Girl didn't get that memo then. She's a total spaz-bot and can keep up with her 1 1/2 yr old boyz no prob. I think what's more likely to make cats "mellow and lazy" is boredom. Make sure (once she's healed from the spay) that you keep her entertained with plenty of play-time and interactive toys, and maybe some cat furniture like a tall cat condo or shelves that she can jump around on. Don't overfeed her (I'm not a fan of bottomless bowls of kibble - that's the number one cause of obesity in pets) and try to channel her hunting instincts by using treat-dispensing balls or hiding tasty morsels around the house for her to find.

Good luck with the spay! I know what you mean about her being miserable when in heat. Hormones are such a crazy powerful thing!

Yeah, at the shelter we call that the "dirty kitty girl dance."  You pegged it.

She needs to be over it before the spay, or the vet may postpone the spay, or charge extra for it, due to the increased chance of bleeding.

I forgot you asked about personality change.  My own view is that a cat that is neutered at about 6 months is the sort of age when maturity often bring a change anyway - on other words it's co-incidence.

It didn't change my two Orientals - both are very lively and playful when not sleeping or feeding.  :)

Yeah, that's my opinion, too. Some cats get lazier as they get older. . .most older cats are spayed. So some people think it's the spaying that caused it but it really was the normal maturation process. Anyway no, I've never seen any personality/activity changes in cats after spaying a female of any age or neutering a young male. Neutering a mature male will change a lot of things, but almost always for the better.

March 7 sounds like a good time to do it. When Dot went into heat, my vet said to wait 10 days--long enough that she would be out of that heat but not so long that she'd go into heat again. And that's about 10 days from now. . .perfect!
