This is a long article, but truly an important read. I've often wondered about using Convenia (an injectable antibiotic) and had some reservations about using it. Please read this and you'll also find some very helpful tips on how to pill your cat, general rules of when to use or not use antibiotics (not after a dental!). Dr. Pierson is highly regarded in her field and is a must-read for any cat mama/papa.

Yeah..... I had just this discussion with my vet, before taking Lucky to the dentist. I called him up to ask what antibiotics to give in case she needed (she lost a canine out of the blue). Lucky is going through some digestive issues and I am trying to get her back eating raw, so no antibiotics would be best. I was considering Convenia - he said NO.
He said in RARE cases, but it does happens, and it has happened in his hospital, Convenia causes an immune disease where the body attacks the red blood cells, killing them. And because it is long term, it is hard to stop that reaction... Animals have died because of it, and he considers a risk not worthy taking for a cat that can be given other antibiotics.
He said for teeth problems, Clindamicyn is far safer than Convenia..... and if I needed antibiotics at all, to choose that (I didn't).
