I just took a 6 week old kitten from a person I know.  The previous owners were irresponsible and didn't take them (the litter) to the vet.  She hasn't had her shots or anything else.

What should I look for the vet to do at 6 weeks?  I want the kitty to be healthy and get what she needs.

There's no place like home
Your vet will do a general exam and start her on the early vaccinations. She's too young for the rabies vaccination (I believe they need to be 4 months for that), but she can start with the FeLV vaccination. She may get a little lethargic afterwards, which is common. She'll be due for another round of vaccinations in 4 weeks to boost the ones she gets now. The vet may also ask for a stool sample to test for parasites.

Yes, lots of vet visits in the first 6 months!

She's still too young to receive any shot of vaccination. Wait until at least 8weeks to get her shot & make sure your kitten is healthy & fit before receiving any shots because kitten usually accumulate side effect like fever & less appetite after receiving shots.. So you want to make sure your kitten is ready to accept the 'weakened viruses' into her body.

But now you should visit the vet first to do general checkup, like check whether she has worms or parasites, etc.

Good luck!

She can be dewormed and de-flead if she's got fleas.  Also, a good wellness exam will check the heart, ears, eyes, and all that stuff.  It's good to get her acquainted with the vet early on so you can develop a relationship with the vet on her.
