I received some very sad news yesterday from a friend (Julie) who has been caring for 10 cats for several years. Julie has taken very good care of these cats (she was licensed to have all cats and received yearly, unannounced inspections, which she always passed). Unfortunately, the apartment that she was renting has been foreclosed (the landlord still collected payments from her even though he wasn’t making payments himself!), and she will have to find a new place to live ASAP. Julie is having a very difficult time finding a place that she can afford (she is disabled and on a very fixed income), and she will need to get rid of six of her cats (she will be keeping the remaining four cats who have more serious disabilities). As you can imagine, she is heartbroken to have to do this but she doesn’t have any other options. She has called around to all shelters within a 100-mile radius. Except for one shelter that is willing to take only one of her cats, all of the other shelters are full.

Please pass this information on to anyone you know who might be willing to adopt a cat (or cats). The cats needing to be rehomed are the following:

1) Chief Joseph  is a gentle, playful 12-year-old Siamese boy. Look at those gorgeous eyes! www.catster.com/cats/1195137

2) Fuzz is a handsome 16-year-old boy with a lovely tuxedo pattern. www.catster.com/cats/1195112

3) Autumn is a 10-year-old Abyssian mix with green eyes. Autumn suffered previous abuse but has come a long way since Julie rescued her. Autumn has hyprcalcemia and receives sub-q fluids every other day but is otherwise doing very well. www.catster.com/cats/1195121

4) Marilia  is a shy 9-year-old girl who was also rescued from an abusive home and has thrived while in Julie’s care. www.catster.com/cats/1195116

5) Graciela is a gentle 11-year-old girl with a beautiful black and white coloring. www.catster.com/cats/1195139

2/19/12 Update:

The no-kill shelter that was previously only willing to take one of Julie’s cats agreed to take three of her cats rather than just one. Unfortunately, it won’t take cats that are on long-term medication, so beautiful Autumn (who needs Sub-q fluids every other day for hypercalcemia) and gracious Graciela (who needs Methimazole 2x/day for hyperthyroid) still need homes. The shelter also wouldn’t take Fuzz, who is sixteen years old and would do better as an only cat. Fuzz is laid back, loves being pet, and has a high-pitched little meow. He doesn't do great with other cats, though.

Please pass this information on to anyone you know who might be willing to adopt a cat (or cats). The cats still needing to be rehomed are the following:

Good news that at least they are taking the three "low maintenance" cats.
for the other three.

2/20/12 Update:

Another no-kill shelter agreed to provide medication and sanctuary for Graciela for life. Julie took Graciela there this morning. She thinks Graciela will adjust well there. Unfortunately, Julie hasn’t been able to find a place to rent that is within her budget and that will accept cats. She is very scared and stressed out. Please keep an ear/eye out for any affordable rentals in the San Luis Obispo area that will accept cats.

Julie had previously hoped to keep four of her cats but now feels that three is a more realistic number (and even that might be a problem). The three remaining cats that she will be keeping are the cats requiring the most medical care. This is such a painful decision for her to make. I know that many times she has gone without in order to provide food and medication for her cats. She is such a good person and desperately needs help finding a place for herself and her cats to live.

She also still needs to re-home three cats. Please pass this information on to anyone you know who might be willing to adopt a cat (or cats). Although Julie lives in Central California, it might be possible to transport these cats to other areas of the country (with the help of the Caster Railroad). The cats still needing to be rehomed are the following:

1) Fuzz is a handsome 16-year-old boy with a lovely tuxedo pattern. Fuzz is laid back, loves being pet, and has a high-pitched little meow. Due to Fuzz’s age, Julie is having difficulty finding a new home for him. It breaks her heart to have to re-home him (he has lived with her for 13 years). www.catster.com/cats/1195112

2) Autumn is a 10-year-old Abyssian mix with green eyes. Autumn suffered previous abuse but has come a long way since Julie rescued her. Autumn has hypercalcemia and receives sub-q fluids every other day but is otherwise doing very well. www.catster.com/cats/1195121

3) Beijo is an adorable, sensitive 4-year-old boy. Beijo has never been in a shelter (just a previous foster home). http://www.catster.com/cats/1195114

I had hoped to report some good news but, if anything, the situation has gotten worse.

Julie has still been unable to find anyone willing to rent her an apartment that permits cats and is within her budget. She has even offered to pay a larger deposit so that she can keep her cats (at least two). Every place has said no so far, and the constant rejection has her very scared. She is afraid she might have to give up all of her cats. I know that would truly devastate her. I’m hoping she can keep three of her cats, but she will definitely need to find homes/no-kill shelter for the other three cats.

I’m posting the following plea again in hopes that someone can help Julie find new homes for her cats (as well as for Julie). Please pass this information on to anyone you know who might be willing to adopt a cat (or cats). Although Julie lives in Central California, it might be possible to transport these cats to other areas of the country (with the help of the Caster Railroad). that she is able to find a place torent that accepts cats, or that they get placed somewhere.  I'm wondering, though, when she got Beijo.  He wasn't originally listed.  She's not continuing to take in new cats, is she?

I am truly very sorry for Julie's situation :(. I certainly do hope these "special needs" cats can find a home very soon. I was confused about Beijo also. He was not listed in your original post. He is a very beautiful tabby . I do hope all of Julie's cats will find new loving homes :cross: :heart3:

No, she always had ten (and was licensed to have ten in her home). Julie originally planned on rehoming six of the cats and keeping four of them.

She found no-kill shelters to take 4 of the cats (which still left two of the cats needing new homes).

But, as time goes on, Julie is getting very scared she's going to have to rehome ALL of her cats in order to find a place to rent and not be homeless. She is disabled and has a very limited income, so she cannot afford to move beyond her current area. Her doctors, friends, and family are also in this area and she helps take her mother to medical appointments.

I agreed to add Beijo to the list of cats needing to be rehomed but asked Julie to give it a little more time (although she doesn't have much more) before we try and rehome all of her cats. I know it would really kill her to have to rehome all of her cats. The remaining three cats she is hoping to keep (not included in the list in my previous postings above) are cats who need more medical care.

Hope this all makes sense! Please let me know if it doesn't.

I don't want anyone to think Julie is a hoarder. The cats she adopted were cats she encountered while volunteering at a kill shelter. Since she is disabled, she knew she had the time to provide the care the special needs cats needed. She was licensed to keep the cats in her apartment and passed yearly surprise inspections from the city animal inspector.

What I find truly heartbreaking about this entire scenario is that Julie had no warning or role in the loss of her apartment. She always paid her rent on time to her landlord (who in turn, was NOT paying the mortgage on the condo but pocketed the money anyway). Because of all of this, Julie hasn't had much time to save much for a deposit (she is on disability) and she lives in a VERY pricey area (near Pismo Beach, CA).

These cats are Julie's family and provide a lot of comfort for her. I am very afraid what will happen to Julie if she has to rehome all of her cats.

Just to clarify the timeline/what is going on with each cat:

When I originally posted, Julie had already found a no-kill shelter that agreed to take only one of her cats (so I didn't post info about that cat in my original post). When she took that cat in, they agreed to take an additional two cats (Marilia and Chief Joseph). The next day, another no-kill shelter agreed to take Graciela.

That leaves 6 cats.

Julie is currently looking to rehome Fuzz (since he'd really prefer to be an only cat anyway), Autumn (who needs fluids 2x/day but is otherwise okay), and Beijo.

Of the three of her cats (who I haven't listed information about above) that Julie is hoping to keep:

--one has radial hypoplasia (twisty front arms)

--one was born with no upper eyelids (had surgery for this but is still having some vision issues) and also has seizures and feline hyperesthesia. She is on medication for these conditions.

--the third cat has chronic bronchitis and allergies and is bonded with the cat with hyperesthesia. He is also bonded with Beijo (which is why Julie was hoping to keep Beijo too and why I didn't post Beijo's information in my earlier posts).

Yes, it makes sense, and, to me, even if I thought she was a hoarder (which I don't), we're in it for the cats, so it wouldn't make any difference.
