So, a little history first. I have a neutered male cat, he's a rescue and around 12yrs old now. I adopted him 11yrs ago. He has a history of crystals in his urine which has caused blockage years ago, he's been on a special diet since then because of it and currently checks out fine at the vet, no UTI or anything. He always uses his box with scoopable litter and it's a clean box.

However, he refuses to allow one of the dogs in the house to have a bed. They have been together for 9 years. The dog is also a male, around 10-11yrs old. Each time this happens, I throw the bed out, get the cat checked out, and wait a while before I buy a new one, usually at least a couple months. During that time the cat uses only the litter box, nowhere else in the house. The dog is a large breed who is aging and needs the extra support of a bed. Each time I buy a new bed within a week the cat will pee on it. I've placed it in different rooms and different areas in those rooms. I also have a female dog, the cat never pees on her bed. Just this one male dog. Over the last 9 years, they've always gotten along, the dog ignores the cat completely. I've bought dog beds with and without cedar in them and different brands or beds from different stores, it's always the same. For most of his life, the dog hasn't had a bed for this reason.
This may sound crazy but it's like the cat has a personal vendetta against just that dog.
The only other thing I can think of is.. The female cat, spayed, happens to love this dog and rubs on him and lays with him each time she passes him. The male cat will randomly attack her. I'm wondering if the male cat just doesn't like the odor of the male dog, whether it's on the dog's bed or the other cat. Is that even a possibility? I love my kitty boy, but this is just not fair to the dog.

I've read about the scent of citrus detouring a cat and bought citrus smelling dog cologne to spray the bed, didn't help. I'm not sure what to do. Any ideas?

Here's a photo of the little stinker.

Sorry for the long post.

What a cutie!

The first thing I can think of is that the cat may be smelling that the bed is new and is bothered by the smell or marking his territory. You could try washing the new bed in whatever detergent you use on your other dog's bed before putting it down. That way they smell the same from the start. My parents use to have the reverse problem, they had a dog that would pee on new beds and found washing them until they smelled like the old beds helped.

Good luck! I'm sure some of our other members will be along soon with some other suggestions.

What a wonderful idea. Honestly, I feel a little silly for not thinking of that myself. It really makes sense. I'll give that a try and hopefully resolve this issue for my old pup. They're like two grumpy old men sometimes.

There's no place like home
I've had cats that loved to pee on our dogs beds. The dogs would bring in all sorts of interesting smells from the outside and I suspect the cats reacted to those smells. The problem with cleaning dog beds is that if the cat urine gets into the foam part of the bed, unless you wash the foam as well as the cover, the urine smell will linger and the cat will go there again and again.

I started making my own dog beds with orthopedic foam which I covered with a plastic material, then made a zippered cover that can be removed for laundering. The dogs love them and the cats didn't like to walk across them at first because the plastic crinkles. It broke the habit and even though they now like to sleep on those beds, they no longer pee on them. I kept the plastic on just in case the cats change their minds.

If you or someone you know sews and want to make one, PM me for how I make them.
