Possible vaccine reaction?

Hi,
Jeri is driving me crazy. She had her check up last October and everything looked great, excellent health! She received then her rabies vaccine booster and a month after she starts sneezing a lot, we did not pay too much attention until she started coughing. Thinking was hairballs, started hairball treatment. Did not work and we realized the cough was more like at the respiratory system. The vet checks her up and takes x-rays, lungs are fine but has mucus accumulation at the upper respiratory tract. He sent antibiotics, cough is still there, then sends steroids (prednisone) and cough disappears but she is still sneezing. I really think this is a reaction to the rabies vaccine.
Have anyone  had a similar problem with the vaccine?
Thank you!

While you could be right, that's not a reaction I've ever heard. It could be a veline herpes infection. You could try giving the cat some L-lysine for a week or so to see if it helps. It wouldn't hurt, at any rate.

If your kitty had the nasal vaccination, she could easily be having a reaction:

Respiratory signs after intranasal vaccines

Cats, may develop mild respiratory signs when vaccinated with intranasal calicivirus and/or herpes virus (the cause of rhinotracheitis).

I've read the nasal vaccination really isn't good for them. That's not what she had is it?

I don't think she would still be reacting after so long, but I could be wrong. It would make more sense to me that she might have picked something up at the vet clinic.

Thank you for your responses!

Just came back form the vet. The vet thinks this is not a reaction to the vaccine. She probably got a feline herpes virus when she was little and lived at the shelter, like in humans the virus stays always in the body and gets active from time to time. In cats, the virus attacks the nose, that is why she is sneezing. By the other hand, she has a mild case of asthma that was causing the cough. The prednisone helped with the asthma, but depressed the immune system and activated the herpes virus. The vet recommended to stop the prednisone for now and give her L-lysine, that helps with viral infections in cats. The vet thinks that if the asthma is mild she may not need any therapy at all. We will see...

If your kitty had an already compromised immune system or has the Herpes virus. - then the vaccine would have had negative effects on the immune system. I have a herpes kitty too, and will never again give her any vaccines. The Lysine will help your kitty. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

Same here Feral.  'Bitz is a herpes kitty and the Lysine will help as you and another poster suggested.  I'm glad this situation looks like it is going to have a good resolution.

Thank you everyone! As an update, we already stopped the prdnisone, unfortunately we had to do it slowly and she had to receive one and a half doses before stopping it completely. Just giving L-lysine, 500 mg twice a day. She still has sneezing attacks and eye discharge. How long does it take to see reduction in symptoms?

Well I know with a new food it can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 1 month to see a difference. Or maybe it is 6 months?

Not sure about the L-lysine
