Megacolon in a cat

We have just learned that our 14 year-old female, Jessie, has an enlarged colon which is causing her stool to back up and often forcing her to vomit. The vet explained that the muscles in an enlarged colon frequently aren't motile enough. We have a laxative/softener to give her. Has any one had experience with this problem? We were told that it is not uncommon in cats.
