Oh no Val!!!
Sending positive energy for you and all of your precious kitties! I know that I've heard of FIV cats living pretty long and happy lives, so it isn't an automatic death sentence. Be sure you are completely informed before making any decisions. Do your own research, don't just depend on the vet. No matter how good they are, they can't be experts on everything.

"Feline immunodeficiency virus can be transmitted from the mother to kittens in the uterus and it is also transmitted from mothers to kittens when they are nursing. However, this is not thought to be a huge risk to kittens.

Unlike feline leukemia, the test for feline immunodeficiency virus is an antibody test. This is a really important difference when trying to interpret the test. If a mother cat has FIV she will pass antibodies against the virus to her kittens in the colostrum (first milk). This antibody will cause FIV tests done on the kittens to be positive. It can take several months (at least four) in some cases for the antibody from the mother to get to low enough levels that it won't cause a positive test.

For this reason, testing a young kitten for FIV is difficult. If the test is positive, you can't tell if the kitten is really positive or just carrying antibodies from its mother. If the test is negative, the kitten may have been exposed but may not have started to produce antibodies since there is a lag period between infection and antibody production that can be as short as two weeks or as long as two months. With these two problems interfering with testing, it is probably best not to try to test kittens until they are at least five months of age or to at least plan on retesting kittens around that time to clarify the results of any earlier tests."

Hmm..according to that info, they may test false positive if they are less than 5 months. Will pass along any information I can find. Sending loads of hugs.

I don't know what to do! I ALWAYS have every cat tested before they are exposed to other cats but since lilly tested negetive and that ws snowwhites last litter I thought that everyone was okay. I'm NOT going to have her pts. I can't do that to her, i just can't
I never thought this would happen to me. I always said if I cat came up + for felv or fiv we would have them pts so they wouldn't suffer, but she's not sick, she doesn't look sick. And my sweet babies

To top it off I left work right after I found out so now my boss is probly mad at me.

I want to ask why Snowwhite had 2 litters and was not spayed but I guess I should mind my own business.

I hope the kittens dont test positive. Good luck. And I'm sure your boss will understand..

Val- these tests are always tricky and false postitives are plentiful. Many of the cats can carry the disease and don't get sick and not all mom cats give the disease to their kittens. Just treat this symptomatically cat by cat, kitten by kitten. Those who test negative, get their shots up to date. I know you are upset and freaking out inside, but keep a list of the cats and just cross them off as they go to the vet and get tested. I would also wait for one month and have Snow tested again. But I wouldn't accept anymore cats into your care no matter what, until you have a handle on this. You can email if you like, I will help you all I can by sharing information and giving you moral support.

Thanks hissy, I'm just so scared. Marble, Nimby, blizzy, and stomry had blood drawn today. I have to wait until thrusday for the results. I have been doing some reading online and it doesn't seem like any of the other cat should have been able to get it. But i'm very concered about the kittens she nursed.
