Benadryl for my kitty

Thread Starter

On my Vets recommendation, I am to begin giving my 13lb male kitty, 2.5ml of Benadryl, twice a day. I am on my way out the door in just a minute. I just got back from my kitty's check-up, with no problems whatsoever. I brought him in, because he has licked off a good portion of his hair where 'the sun don't shine', and a 4 inch patch under his right front leg. I'm not sure if it's the new cat nip from a week ago, or maybe some of the food that only my other kitty eats. I haven't bought any new detergent, and he gets flea combed everyday. Anyway, I'd like to know if anyone has used Benadryl on their kittys before. I appreciate all experiences and thoughts, that can aide my itchy baby.

Hi, my boy Lucas has been itching a lot for the past year, but he doesn't have allergies,  that's a long story.   But our vet did prescribed Benadryl once, but I decided not to give it to him anymore because I guess the taste of the pill is bitter or something and he started to salivate and to spit it everywhere in the house, it was awful.  Then the vet told me to give him the liquid one mixed with milk , which sounded weird to me, but I did it, but the result was the same.  I don't know if this has happened to other cats here, but it happened with my Lucas.

I hope your kitty gets better soon.

Hugs to you and your kittyrub.gif

Yes, unless it is in pill form and you get it down into the throat, because it is so very bitter, it makes them foam and salivate like crazy. Most run around trying to shake it off, and there's a lot of foamy saliva to clean up. I assume the vet did a skin scraping to make sure it wasn't some kind of skin infection/fungus/parasite?

Yes, what Laurie described is what happened to Lucas, there are some things I don't how to express in English:)

Tammy, you said it just fine. laughing02.gif A lot of saliva, spitting it everywhere. Very distressing for everyone. agree.gif

Tammy, I'm wondering, would you have access to size 0 empty gelatin capsules locally (from a local pharmacy) for instance, or online? For example

Because these capsules solve all pilling problems.  They make things very easy for kitties.

haha thank you Laurie:)

Yes, I do have access to the empty capsules, in fact, I bought a whole bag of them , I was using them to give Lucas a Natural Allergy Defense medicine, but since Lucas problems are not allergies I stopped giving him the medicines.  The empty capsules I have are size 3 though, but they are small and they work great.
