Kneading only me

My female cat Cucumella is 9 years old and has been living with my husband and I for the last three months. She is very affectionate and will spend a lot of time on our laps or simply around us. I am intrigued by the fact that she only kneads me, never my husband. It is me who feeds her. Has it got anything to do with that? Many thanks.

Hi Golondrina. Welcome to TCS!

It could be due to the fact that you're the one feeding her - being the regular feeder for a cat is often recommended as a way to speed up the building of trust between you and the cat, so she's very likely associating you with something she really enjoys: food! biggrin.gif

Some cats also bond to certain people quicker than others. Our Cottonrbheart.gif was my cat from the moment we first laid eyes on him and our Sybil is currently my husband's cat - sometimes they just click with one person faster then another. It certainly doesn't mean she'll never reach the same comfort level with your husband, just that she grew comfortable with you first. If you'd like, you can try having him feed her 1/2 of the time and see if that helps speed up the bonding process.

Hi Ms. Freya, thanks for your reply. Cucumella actually spends a lot of time with my husband. She will climb onto his working table when he is there and will spend hours just watching him work or falling asleep next to him. She will jump on his lap whenever he sits in the couch; as he is a late sleeper she will sit outside the bedroom door in the morning just waiting for him to come out. It is possible then that kneading me is associated with the fact that it is me who feeds, brushes her and cleans her sandbox. Thank you again.

My two kittens, Pangur and Nutter are very attached to me in that way... Pangur will greet everyone and purr for anyone, Nutter is more shy though and believes that I am her only one person I think...I have concluded from this that cats choose who they like more...cause Nutter is like attached at my hip at all times... and hides whenever someone else (such as other family members) try to pet her and stuff

Thank you Flinch4me, Yes, I suppose they have their reasons for their preferences and we should just accept them without so much analyses. They can be very intriguing sometimes.

All of my cats knead.  Mostly with me and not my partner.  I do all the feeding, brushing and playing with them.  My partner loves all of them but is not as affectionate with them as I am.  I probably have bonded more with them.  I never have questioned their motivation.  I just assume they are happy when with me biggrin.gif

My Dutch will knead anyone if they sit still for her, but she prefers me biggrin.gif. And when she kneads she also shoves her face in and nuzzles like she's nursing. If nobody will sit still for her, she'll knead her favorite fleece blanket. For her it seems to be a pre-sleep ritual - some snuggles, some kneading, and lights out!

Well, that's interesting! But I'm afraid Cucumella still kneads only me although she is very sociable with everybody else. After doing her kneading for a while she will seat on me her paws on my chest both sides of my throat. She stays like that for a while and finally sits on the couch with her head on my lap.  I've never seen her knead a blanket or anything like that, only me. Thank you Christina for replying. I'm new to cats and appreciate all the information I get. Cucumella is 9 years old but I've only had her for the last 4 months.Best wishes to you.
