I recently adopted a 4 year old Persian from a woman looking to rehome her cat because her daughter was allergic and "the cat didn't really like them anyway". After meeting and talking to her I found out that she had a young child (the allergic one) and a full grown Great dane that lived in the house and would often be "overly aggressive" to the cat. On top of that she recently gave him a lion cut by herself, with no training or know how, the poor guy is naked in horrible ways, and also a bath, again, with no prompting.

She arrived, dropped off the cat and left before he was even out of the carrier, there was no love lost. However there was a lot of damage done to the poor kitty.

Wicket, the Persian, started out a little leery of my apartment but he seemed to be okay, the owner brought his old litterbox and litter he always used, and food he always ate. He ate fine, used the box fine and seemed to be doing well. However that night he kept me up all night crying. Then the next day he started refusing to eat his old food, and then the next day began pooping and peeing in the corner of my bedroom on the other side of the room from the litter box.

Today I woke up to find he had pee'd on a chair in the morning and came home from class (I go to school 7-2) to find he hadn't moved off my bed all day, no eating, no drinking, no pooing, no peeing, just stayed on the bed all day.

I had gone to the pet store to try a bunch of different foods and treats with him to see if he liked any of them (I live in Tokyo and this is my first time owning a cat here so I'm new to the different types of food, MUCH bigger selection than I'm used to in the States!) he ate some of the food when I brought it to him in a dish and placed it on the bed, but then I realized he had pee'd the bed, where he was laying.

That's when I really started to worry about this little guy. I know if a cat just pees or poos where he is it's usually because he's scared, like in the box on the way to the  vets for instance.

I tried some new food with him, he ate a little on the bed, and then later got off the bed and ate a little and pee'd, in the box, but then he went right back to the same spot on the bed where he pee'd and just sat there. He never really lays down, he's always tense and shaking, like he's terrified of something. I try all the things I'm used to doing with the ferals and strays we'd bring in to the shelter I used to work at in the States, but nothing seems to calm him down. I want him to know nothing is going to hurt him here but he just, he's really scarred by whatever his old home was like.

I guess I'm looking for suggestions as to what I can do to make him feel more relaxed and at home. I live in a 1LDK, which is basically a big studio apartment with the bathroom and toilet rooms closed off in a hall. I've been keeping him in the bedroom/studio because the hall area isn't heated and he shakes so badly I feel like he'd freeze out there.

I bought a second litterbox in case he didn't like to poo and pee in the same place, and tried a different litter in the new one in case the old litter was the problem. He's since pee'd in both so I don't really know if it's the litter or box causing the problems. He seems to only make a mess when I'm "gone", either at school or asleep. Asleep seems to mean to him I'm not there anymore as well.

I have an appointment for him at the vet on Sunday because he's been sneezing non-stop, especially while he eats and even for a peke-face Persian I don't think that amount of sneezing is normal. I know going outside of the box is another sign he could have a URI. So I'm going to hopefully take any illness out of the equation, but don't know how much the vet visit is going to terrify him and fear it could push him further away.

So um, yeah, there's where I'm at. This little guy got no love at his old house and his people didn't care enough to stop the giant dog from terrorizing him, so the fact that he trusts me at all is amazing, I just need advice on what to do to make him feel safe, and at home.

Bless you for taking him in...poor fellow.  The only helpful suggestion I can think of is Feliway, a calming product that comes in a wall plug in diffuser or spray.  I don't know if you have it in the stores there.  I usually order mine from the internet.  It mimics the pheromone that cats make when they rub their faces on things and  has a calming effect.  Time and patience will work wonders, I bet.  Oh, and an enzyme cleaner for that spot on the bed.  They will keep returning to the soiled spot to pee if you don't clean it with an enzyme cleaner.  Hope the vet visit goes well.  You are doing the right thing by taking him to the vet even though I'm sure he won't thank you at the time.

Poor little boy. Thank goodness you rescued him from that terrible home. I agree with the feliway plug in diffusers, if they are available there.

There is a very good chance he has a urinary tract infection, which are very painful. It's good that he is still peeing, so you know he isn't blocked, and I'm glad you are taking him to the vet. Be sure to ask for a urinalysis. However, if he does stop peeing, or you see any straining, get him to the vet immediately.

It's odd that he wants to sit in his soiled area, it must be a security thing for him. I don't even want to imagine what kind of nightmare he's been through. It may take him a long time to learn to relax and trust and love, but it sounds like you are just the right person to do it.

Welcome to the forum, and please keep us posted on Wicket.

Poor guy!  I have 2 Persians.  They can be prone to allergies and URI's because of the "smooshed in" faces.  Plus Persians don't do well when they have been mistreated and he obviously has.  He's more than likely depressed.   Even a bad home is still a home and he will need some time to adjust.  More than likely, she didn't tell you... She probably rehomed him because of litterbox issues.  For some reason, Persians seem to have them frequently, it's mostly because of the other thing they are prone to.  Take him to a vet, they are also prone to crystals in their bladder which makes them uncomfortable and have him checked for PKD.  Frequent crystals can lead to that.  I doubt his previous owners cared to check and keep up on it.

It might take him awhile but once he starts feeling better and looking better, he'll be able to relax and bond with you.  If you need any help or advice on Persians please feel free to PM me anytime!

Bless your heart.  The only thing I can suggest is Feliway and Rescue Remedy to help the little guy with stress.
