Question about feeding when gone for a day...

Anyone have any suggestions on what we should do? We're going to have to start heading into NYC more often. Not sure HOW often.

But due to Gary's medical situation, we mostly work from home. When I transitioned from free-fed kibble to canned, we settled on four meals a day.

But to head into NY, I'll have to feed them early, and they'll likely miss at least lunch - and dinner may be late. Now, they can go about 9 hours without a problem. But at that point it's a gamble as to whether or not Lazlo will vomit from the empty tummy.

We may actually be heading in tomorrow. Should I just wing it - and feed them when we get back? Or should I leave out some frozen medallions of something? They've never eaten a small patty or medallion in that form. I always smoosh and mix with water. But if they're hungry... ????

And of course, with that, it would be very likely that Chumley, Billy or Ming Loy would just eat them, so not really solve the Lazlo problem.

Now, tomorrow we're likely out of there mid-afternoon, so it should just be missing lunch, and not such a big deal. But I am wondering about what we should do when I know we'll be gone 10 - 12 hours.

Kidding!
Some will say it is fine...... that's not a problem.... But with Lazlo, you are right, it is a gamble.
I have read about leaving a rock solid patty out and they will nibble on it as it defrosts, if they get hungry....
Now - that's is the gamble of bacterial contamination, and the gamble that they will eat it in the first place dontknow.gif I know some people do that - would I recommend it? Not sure. BUT - do not cut that patty - the bigger the better, as it takes longer to defrost..... It it was me, I would just leave them hungry....
I have a timed feeder here that I can put freeze-gel packs in it. Then put the little containers on the top, and set the timers. Essentially, a manual fridge - on meal time, the thing pops open. something like that could work too..... But there are two compartments..... and you have 8 cats..... so you would need to leave a few of those out. And again, use them first to see if they would eat it in the first place - I have it for those occasions, bought it for wet food... Don't know how well they would work for raw - not that insulated..... But better than nothing, I suppose agree.gif
Here you go - Mine is similar to this one:

Interesting, Carolina.

Actually, I remember seeing in the health forum someone gave their cat pepcid a/c (roughly same size kitty) - but half the dose. Tomorrow (if we actually go LOL), I'll let them skip lunch. We're not in the "swing" of this office/meeting thing, and Gary will be itching to get out of there and home. So to beat traffic means they won't miss dinner. nono.gif

But if I catch the vet's call about Lazlo's blood work, I'll ask her about splitting the dose of his pepcid a/c in half, and only give him half the night before we go, and half the morning we do go - maybe RIGHT before we leave. dontknow.gif

Just another option too. I think I read somewhere, can't remember where, Catinfo.org or Dr. Pierson's, or...... BUT someone said you could put a couple cans of wet food in the freezer overnight. Then when you leave in the morning - plop the frozen canned food on a few plates. It will take a few hours to thaw anyway and it will be safe to leave out for up to 12 hours and by that time it will have been eaten. This is what I will have to do when I go on my trip. The sitter will have to leave out frozen canned food for Perla and Perkins. I will not leave out frozen raw patties or medallions for two reasons and this is just my opinion. If the raw meat does not get eaten quickly enough - it will get spoiled sitting there. And secondly - if a cat drags the meat off the plate across the floor - you will have pieces of raw meat on the floor's eek.gif. I have seen Wendall drag his raw and run with it. So personally, for my situation and my cats, I would go with the frozen canned food biggrin.gif. I thought that was a briliant idea - whoever said it laughing02.gif I would use an extremely high quality - grain-free - high meat canned food like EVO or CORE. So that is my plan for when I have to go away for even a day. 1bluewinky.gif

Hope you have a very safe drive today hugs.gifhugs.gifheartpump.gifwavey.gif

VERY COOL, Carolina!!!!! I have never seen that before - that particular model, I mean. I really, really like that look of that. Reasonably priced too. Thanks for showing us that. I am adding it to my wish list. biggrin.gif

This is a very interesting situation and it was something I was thinking about when I was deciding is raw food was right for my kitties.   I will be going to work soon , everyday, all day, and I have no one to feed my kitties raw food.  My mom could feed them, but she won't go through all the trouble of dealing with raw, only the meowmys have the patience to deal with that.

I hope you can find a way to feed them when you are out Laurie, I like both Carolina's and Lauren's ideas:)

Hugs, TAmmy

Tammy, actually what I'm doing is what most people who work away from home do: I'm switching to three meals a day. laughing02.gif It's going well, so far. smile.gif I feed them in the morning, in the evening, then late, before bed. biggrin.gif
