In Burbank, California (Los Angeles County), a 23-year-old woman and her brother were arrested by Burbank Police for stabbing a dog to death last Saturday (February 4) with an eight-inch knife. Their 47-year-old mother was also arrested for helping her children get rid of the knife by putting it in a dumpster. The police said the crime scene was "pretty horrific."
This article comes from the Los Angeles Times, and the dog was a cocker spaniel mix. It did not give the reason why these people would do something so terrible. It also did not say whether the dog was theirs or not.
I posted another story about a 23-year-old man who kicked his chihuahua to death, along with a story about an 18-year-old in my community who beat his dog every time he argued with his mother.
A lot of judges give slaps on the wrist for animal abuse cases. Those of us who love animals have to work to increase the penalties for such heinous acts. Law enforcement is finally seeing the connection between animal abuse and going up the food chain, as it were, to crimes inflicted on humans.
After reading this article, I have one question: What is wrong with our young people? I'd welcome responses from those who are in this age group, or have children who are.
(I know this thread should go in "Breaking Mews," but I couldn't find a way to post it -- no button to click on.)
