I went out and bought Phaedra a coupe cans of NV Instinct today. I opened up the beef can, and the venison can, and saw this:

It was very dry with that white stuff all over. Is this normal? Looks absolutely disgusting.

Ok I got a hold of them and they said it's concealed fat, since they don't use additives it tends to separate.

I was going to say it looks like fat, but still pretty gross to open up and see, I guess stir it in!

I have also noticed this in the Instinct venison and lamb cans (not so much the chicken or duck flavors).  It makes sense that this happens due to the lack of stabilizers such as carrageenan and guar gum. One of the main reasons I buy Nature's Variety is that they are one of very few brands that don't include carrageenan in their canned products.

Yup, totally normal. I always warn people at the demos that it may look like that when they open it, but just to stir it up a bit before feeding.
