Suddenly Defecating All Over the House

Thread Starter

We had three cats, two were about 15 years old and littermates when one of them developed lymphoma and had to be put to sleep a few weeks ago.

Ever since, her sister has been defecating around the house. We're not finding evidence of urination around the house, but small bowel movements. With another cat sharing the litterbox, we can't be sure she's avoiding the litterbox entirely, and she must be using it to urinate.

Can this be grief? She's behaving pretty normally otherwise. Can it be medical?

Any ideas will be most welcome, as we can't continue to tolerate the current behavior. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Welcome to TCS and glad you found us. wavey.gif I am sorry about your recent loss of your cat hugs.gif and this new unwanted behavior. It is very possible it is grief and she is missing her sibling rub.gif

I am going to have your thread moved to the Behavior Forum. In that Forum - you will receive many great suggestions and people having the same troubles and how they manage the problem. It could also be a Health issue and she might need a vet. But let's first try Behavior since she just lost her friend shame.gif... Again, Welcome, and I am sure you will get a lot of help here on TCS.

I have moved this to our Behavior forum so it will get the type of attention it deserves.

Are the stools firm, as in "normal", or are they runny like she is sick? If they are normal, I think grief is definitely a possibility, but take her to the vet to make sure there isn't an underlying condition. Animals do funny things when they're stressed (and grieving can surely cause stress). My first thought, as long as she's healthy, is maybe she thinks her littermate is lost and is leaving "signs" for her to find her way home? I know, it's a stretch, but who knows what a cat is thinking.

We lost our cat, Monster, on Christmas Eve and even though she passed at home, her litter-mate Harley looked for her for a few weeks. He wasn't doing anything like that, and I think he actually knew she was gone, but he was just lost without her and wondered around looking in all her favorite sleeping places.

As long as your kitty is healthy it may just take time and understanding. Hopefully someone will respond who has more experience with altering behavior and has suggestions on what to do.

I am so sorry for your loss though hugs.gif.
