Hi everyone,

I recently adopted a 2.5 year old cat who had some health issues. She just finished a 21 day cycle of azithromycin for giardia, and when I got her, she had pretty bad sneezing fits so I had been giving her L-Lysine for about 3 weeks. The sneezing stopped and she is acting healthy, except every morning at around 5 or 6:00 she has coughing fits. This doesn't seem to happen at any other time of day, just early in the morning. I checked the symptoms of feline asthma and it doesn't look the same (her neck isn't extended, there is no wheezing), so I'm not sure what this could be! There are never any hairballs. Any ideas why she coughs at the same time every day, and how urgent is this?

Thank you all for your time!

Wonder if it's drainage and when she lifts her head from sleeping, it causes her to cough.

That could be! Especially since she might still be recovering from respiratory issues..? She is my first cat, so this is all new to me. Does this seem like something that will go away in time, or should I treat it like more of an urgent problem and take her to the vet ASAP?

Thank you so much for your advice

I would discuss it with the vet.  Just call them and tell them you don't think she's completely over the upper respiratory infection.  Of course, she could have airborne allergens and that may be contributing to the problem.  I give my kitties an antihistamine when their allergies are acting up.  Just 1/4 to 1/2 of a 10 mg Claritin (I get the generic stuff) once a day.  I crush it up and mix it with wet food every morning.
