7 Month-Old Kitten and Biting!

Hi there,

I've read through this forum and the articles on biting, but I am looking for input on my particular situation.

Max is a 7-month old Burmese kitten who has taken to biting during play at times. He'll attack my feet, but only if I am not wearing shoes. He will occasionally plop himself down on my computer keyboard, which interferes with my work. That's one thing, but he loves to bite the cord or the keyboard itself. If I try to prevent him from biting, he'll bite my hands and such...not too hard, but enough to be annoying and he really doesn't want to stop. He seems to enjoy the attention even though I tell him 'no'.

Another odd thing is, on the bed there's a little green blanket we keep at the end of the bed, and he will bite me most of the time if I am just laying on that blanket or sitting there calmly. He doesn't sleep there too much, so it's not territorial (I don't think) since he's very people-centric and sleeps where I am or prefers to hang out in the office while I work. I play with him when I take breaks and he gets tons of affection, though not too much coz I don't want to overwhelm him. He's also quite well-fed and I keep his litterbox clean since I work from home.

He's quite affectionate normally, and will jump up on the desk to 'greet' me whenever he enters the room, but if he plops down on the keyboard or between keyboard and monitor I know he's gonna start biting the keyboard wire, my hands, etc. It's almost like he wants there to be more space there and there isn't, so he gets annoyed and has re-directed aggression. Unfortunately, I have no room on the desk to place a catbed. When he does sleep in the catbed, it's on the couch behind me.

Any ideas about these odd biting behaviors seemingly related to certain locations? He stopped biting us in the bed when I put him out of the bedroom, so that's good and it only took a week. Lately, when he's been spazkitty I put him out of the room for a while, and he seems to appreciate being let back in since he likes being in here so much. I want him to behave in this area tho and not go so crazy. He's got a cat condo and I try to drain some energy having him shoot up and down that chasing his cat toys...but it hasn't helped the biting too much.

Ideas and strategies are welcomed!

Burmese are usually active and rather demanding cats as well as affectionate.  He's a teenager now, and he might also be bored especially if he's an indoor only cat.

My suggestions are:

1) as soon as he starts biting, or is displaying behaviour that's likely to end in biting, put him in another room.

2) consider getting him a playmate

3) look at this website for ideas on how to amuse him in the house:http://www.thecatshouse.com/

Thanks for the reply,

I do think another cat would help. They could wear each other out!

I'm definitely starting to remove him from the situation when he bites instead of trying to get him to stop. Seems easier to do that or distract him.

Love that cathouse site. I do plan to build my kitty some catwalks so he can get around more than he does.
