Every once in a while Bailey gets a little crazy, runs around, and fluffs out her tail. From what I read cats do this when they are frightened or angry, but Bailey does it under calm circumstances and even after she has rubbed against my legs which I know is an affectionate response. I wonder if she's seeing something I don't see that scares her. Any ideas?

Polly gets a chub-tail when we pet him vigorously. I think if a cat gets very excited for any reason, it can happen.
Cats can sense things we cant
What it sounds like is that the cat is reacting to the situation. Who knows, some cats get ruffled by lots of little things.
