Mischievous Cat

Hi there (:

I have a cat that is about 7-8 months old now and despite our best efforts (and with any advice we've found on the Internet) we just don't get anywhere with correcting his behavior. He rips toilet paper and bread bags (+bread) to shreds whenever he gets his claws on them. He runs around on the counters and opens cabinets and thus gets his little paws on all our cooking surfaces and pots and pans. He is also attention seeking (and has been from the very start) and meows loudly and long whenever he is even remotely bored. He's got toys and we do play with him several times every day and give him a lot of love in general. But we're getting frustrated here. We've tried clapping our hands while saying NO, hissing and spraying with water, simply just lifting him away and ignoring his meowing (after checking he's alright naturally)... but even though its been MONTHS of this we just don't seem to be getting anywhere. What are we doing wrong? :/ It's making both parties unhappy, but we just want him to get the few rules we do have.

Well, I have a lot of cats so training all of them isn't an option. But I've never had any success with that anyway. What I did was to put baby locks on all the cabinets, put all edibles into the fridge or microwave or a locked cabinet (a breadbox would work too) and put the toilet paper in a coffee can (though I understand they have real toilet paper holders now). After a while they forgot they did it or outgrew it and now I don't have to lock up the toilet paper. I still have the baby locks on the cabinets and keep food locked away, though.

They forgot/outgrew it huh? Hmmn, I will try doing that and hope my little Laffayette do the same. Thanks! :D

He sounds to me like he might be bored.  He's also a teenager and he sounds an active, intelligent and demanding cat.  I have two of those - Oriental blacks - and it's just as well I have two as they are each other's best toy.  Have you thought about a playmate for your cat?  Another cat of a similar age and temprement?  The might take a little while to settle with each other, but when i see how much energy mine burn playing with each other (they are 4 now) I'm so glad there are two of them.

Aaaah yes, that we have. Though we didn't find any that was quite suitable (he's an indoor cat as we live on the third floor, we only found outdoor ones) and our economy doesn't really allow us to get another right now. Though once we do we will start to consider it again ^^ Thank you

You are right to hold off until the finances permit, but hopefully that won't be too long.  A feisty 4-month old kitten might fit in well, might be easier than one of the same age, and is less likely to have got used to going out.

This site might have some good ideas for environmental enrichment as well.  Don't miss out the 's' - you will get something entirely different and far less savoury!
