Neutered cat.. um.. servicing himself?

I don't know how else to describe this. Oliver used to knead our brown fleece blanket and put himself to sleep. But then he began to stand up and knead. Then while we lay down at night he would stand up and sort of stomp on my arm as he knead and sucked on the blanket. When it moved to my arm it got weird. I thought nothing of it until one night I moved my arm from under the blanket to stop him stomping on my arm and my arm got wet o.O Smelled weird. So I stopped letting him do that. Last night I went in the room to read and Oliver came in with me so I could close the door and my bunny could come out in the living room with Matt. And after playing with him (give me a break! My required reading is Shakespeare for school.. Playing with Oliver was way funner!).

Okay. So he began kneading the blanket (without my arm) and I began to read. He.... well. He finished and then cleaned himself. It smelled and I was somewhat offended because I don't know his background and HE'S NEUTERED!!!

   What's going on!

Sometimes it's a sign of dominance, or a sign of a urinary problem...has Oliver been to the vet recently? If not, It's probably a good idea to look into taking him. Also, LDG posted a good article on this awhile back:

Hopefully that might shed some light on his behavior. I'm sure some of our other members will be along soon with some advice. I remember a few others here having cats with this behavior.

Thanks :) He went to the vet when we got him in November. He was cleared of all health problems then. What could be other symptoms of urinary problems? And what causes it? How do we treat it? Thanks I'll read the link

The main thing to look for is painful urination - the cat might be avoiding the litterbox because of pain or crying out when they pee. They may also be struggling to pee. How they get it depends on the cat. Sometimes it's food related, some cats are predisposed to UTIs, some will go through their entire lives without a problem. If he does have a UTI, your vet will likely be able to help narrow down the cause.

More info on feline urinary disease can be found here: http://www.thecatsite.com/a/feline-lower-urinary-tract-disease-flutd

For treatment, he'd absolutely need to go to the vet as he'd likely need antibiotics.

Well thankfully he's perfectly fine with the litterbox!! I'll definitely keep an eye on him though just to be sure. This behaviour may very well be dominance related because he has been showing signs of aggressive rough play- as if he maybe was taken from his siblings too early (such is the case with many kittens who are the result of idiots not fixing their outdoor pets). And only recently did I even learn of a cat hierarchy system!! I always attributed it to dogs because they're pack animals and cats are more solitary. But with my Oliver things are definitely getting weird!! ha ha!

Another point to make, since he was an outdoor cat prior and has since taken well to adjusting to his new indoor life I noticed him getting a little more frustrated of late. He is testing boundaries to get into the laundry room (which I wouldn't mind if the door to the apartment upstairs in our shared laundry room didn't have a cat door) and trying to get outside when we shovel or put out trash. I am trying to harness train him but he does the death roll thing and makes the whole thing impossible!

Maybe he's just masturbating? Lots of mammals do it. This is the most likely explanation for the behavior described. Generally, it's not dominance if it's with humans. Sometimes animals just masturbate (though it can be dominance with other cats).

Gee I hope so! Though he is quite dominant with play and when we don't pay attention to him while on computers or watching tv. He also, for badness, picks and paws at the bunny condo for negative attention. Urg. But I'm thinking fleece just gets him 'going' you know? Thanks for the link, going to read it now!

To me it sounds as though he's frustrated with the fact that he's fixed... sometimes I have noticed animals will know when they are fixed... or unable to really do anything sexual anymore...

and so it may lead to agressive behavior as well as the masterbating thing that he kind of realized he isn't really able anymore... he may try but nothing really happens....so in this he may feel as though he's less of a tom... and not to be mean or anything but like human males who have erectile disfunction feel that they feel like they are less of a man...it seems that sounds as though what your cat is going through

Actually, I wouldn't put it past him. That's a very reasonable explanation, Oliver WAS an outdoor cat before we rescued him. I guess the parents of his old owner had him neutered young and then in the hands of his old owner Oliver was in a neighborhood with a lot of tom cats. He is free of tom cat diseases but I have no doubt he witnessed the activity of tom cats. :)

So, we let him do it? I do anyway because my dog was unneutered and I knew he had urges (total virgin aside from his toys). But my bf doesn't want to see Oliver do anything like that. I think Oliver is taking more to me anyway given the fact I wake up early to feed him, I feed him at night as well, and I play more with him.

Well, I can't really think of anything to do to stop it, except maybe keeping fleece away from him, so yeah, I'd just let him do it. He's not really hurting anyone. Least of all your boyfriend. laughing02.gif
