Hi there. I have just joined this sight and I am hoping that someone can help me. I have 2 cats who are mother and daughter, aged 12 and 10 years. Last week the oldest cat didnt come home, this is very unusual, the longest time she has ever stayed out is two days, so this being the eight day I am frantic, to make things worse the younger cat has also disappeared, she has been gone for almost two days now. Both cats have totally different natures, they are both outdoor cats and both never stray far from home. I would be grateful if anyone can tell me if this behaviour can be classed as "normal" or is this a little strange. Thanking you. xxxx

Have you checked all the shelters in your area, contacted all the neighbors, put up posters? Shelters only hold cats for 3 days so it's something that should be done right away. I hope you find them!

I second Willowy.  Whatever you do, do search them actively. Start ASAP.

It may be they got closed in somewhere. Some neighbour closing his cellar or so without noticing there is a cat. Begin with the oldest who dont hear  good...

It may be a over zealaous city animal control officer having a campaing of searching for loose / homeless cats.  As Willowy said - some of the official shelters hold their "arrestants" just a very short period, a week or even shorter (perhaps so shortly as 3 days), and if nobody fetch them, on they go...

It may be some helpsome person who wants help homeless cats out in the winter...   In this case you have a little more time. The risk here they may get adopted... It may be awkward situations.

In some other variations you will not see them alive whatever you do.  Which is one of the reasons for many of us to keep the residents as indoors only.  We dont need to endure this stress, this anxiety always there.

Good luck!   *vibes*

Welcome to TCS :). I am so sorry to hear your cat's have been missing for days now. I find it odd also, since you say they never stay away this long. I would be actively looking for them, call shelters, call neighbors, put up flyers, call the vet's in the area. If they were really friendly, I wonder if someone took them in and is trying to find you, the owner :dk:. I hope you find them soon. :cross: If you do, I would consider keeping them indoors from now on, much safer for them. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

AS the others are saying here, it's EXTREMELY important to contact your local shelter, call them daily so they get to know your name and who you are looking for.

If it's at all possible, the first time you contact them, I would surely do it in person, paying a visit to their feral cat barn. (I know how heartbreaking that is) to see for yourself that they are NOT there and just slipped through like they do occasionally at my local shelter...(sometimes description, etc. will vary)

Believe this, it does happen, at our shelter they now only have to hold a feral for 2 days, yes that's ONLY 2 DAYS!

The second missing kitty is likely missing from searching out her companion.

The one missing for 8 days is unusual for sure.

She may have been closed in a garage, been injured, etc. but hard to know obviously.

A couple years ago I was assisting a neighbor in searching for her missing kitty.

I got this idea to buy several cans of smelly tuna, the cheap type, and have bright flashlights with us. We headed out about an hour after dark, and about every 5 houses or so, set out on the sidewalks paper plates with tuna and juice.

This must have brought out every single cat in the area, it was amazing! We kept rechecking the previous plates put down for her cat.

Lo-and-behold, out came her cat and was chowing on a plate of tuna.

If your cats are in the area still, which is highly likely since they will not stray far from their home/food source, this is a great way to bring them out.

My biggest thought is if your community is anything like mine, animal control is very gung-ho on snatching so-called strays up fast.

I wish you luck and success in finding your kids :)
