What causes Cat Trilling?

Under what circumstances is the cat trilling?  Our Flambe does it just talking to himself.  Some cats trill or "chatter" when they are looking at something exciting outside.  Mother cats trill to their kittens.

She trills whenever she starts a new activity or sees something new.

That's usually an indicator of excitement. My two will trill when birds land on the back porch.

Yep. My Boots trills all the time when he's happy and excited.

One of mine, Constantine (my current avitar), trills a great deal. He does it when he's playing, which he does a lot, or just walking around the house. I don't know why he does this, but I enjoy it.
