Nighttime Psychosis

So anyway,

The last couple of weeks Bandit has been getting crazy out of control at night. Everything from running in manic circles for hours on end, to meowing non stop, and jumping all over us.

His most recent thing is to stand on the bed and meow, and if we don't respond (at like 3 in the morning) , he will literally jump up 4 feet in the air and come back down and land on our chest. Once on chest, he will just meow and meow.  Meanwhile, smokie gets so annoyed as he gets woken up too and retaliates by biting bandit, almost like he is saying shut up and go away, its sleepy time. It hurts, wakes us up- and I just don't know what to do???

So bandit sleeps most of the day, which might explain why he is so wide awake at night? Can I somehow make him not sleep during the day?

Have you tried playing with him and tiring him out before you go to bed? That usually works with my cats.

Yep we play for HOURS before bed. Usually, hubby & I watch a movie in our bed before we fall asleep, and the whole time- bandit is getting playtime- active playtime with the feather toy, balls, etc

Mine do this every once in awhile.  I call it the kitty crazies!!  Unfortunately, I think it is just something they do... No matter how you "tire them out" before you turn in.  A cat can "nap" for 30 minutes and be fully recharged!!  Mostly mine are good about not doing this and sleeping when I do... But once a month or every other month, for about a week, they go nuts at night!!  I just shut them out of my bedroom and let them tear up.

i don't know if you will accept this but...i set boundaries, like The Dog Whisperer.....i do NOT allow my kitties into my bedroom. they must be content with the rest of my residence - there's lot of it. at times, i have noticed esp Luna running about like crazy and then hissing at boy - it's all part of their shenanigans but i ignore it unless i hear some crying and then i say 'boy' or 'luna' WHAT are you doing? and they stop.  perhaps it's the sexual thing (altho both of my cats are neutered). in boy's case i offered him a neck pillow which serves as his 'girlfriend' and he masturbates maybe 4X daily BUT he no longer bothers his syster luna. do you have such a small pillow for him? mine is square and was a neck pillow for use in the passenger's side of driving.

I think he wants more of your attention. Playing with him while you are watching TV is okay, better than nothing, but for some cats it is not enough.

I suggest you reserve a time every night for one on one interactive play, before you watch TV in bed. No TV. Just you and the cats. And reserve some of his daily quota of food for right before bed.

If you can give him a little interactive time in the morning too, it will help. If you play with him before you leave for the day, his energy, both physical and mental, will be stimulated and he will be more likely to play on his own for a while after you leave. Also, if you haven't, put bird feeders in front of a favorite window for Cat TV.

Adding in those two interactive, no other distractions, play times, at the same times every day, will go a long way toward helping him feel more settled at night. Cats love routine. Soon he will know when those play times are, that will help, too, as he wil be more content to amuse himself at other times, knowing he is going to have your undivided attention in the morning and in the evening.

I can't sleep without my babies in the bed with me.... it's strange, but I can't.

So far it has gotten better. The past 2 nights they both fell asleep at the same time we did!
