And it's PAID!!!!!

It has nothing to do with my major, or interests, but hey. I take what I can get. And I'm only a sophomore, so there'll be plenty of time to work in law firms next year and the year after.

I'll be tutoring at-risk kids in reading and math (6th and 4th grade) at a local public charter school, to help them prepare for the FCAT (state grade level tests) in March. This school mainly serves kids who come from low-income areas -- some of them are homeless. Some of them are several grade levels behind where they should be, due to moving, substandard education in the past, etc. so my job is to help them get up to speed if at all possible.

They actually offered me a choice of a struggling elementary school or a high-achieving high school, but I picked this one. These kids need it WAY more, and I feel like I'll make much more of an impact.

Plus, this will help me when I apply for the Truman Scholarship next year. You have to pick a current situation and write a public policy proposal about how it can be improved, and I wanted to do the state of public education, so I think this is going to work out perfectly.

I'm so happy!! :D

That sounds really awesome!! I wanted to do something like this, but I could never balance work and school, so I didn't really work while I was a full time student. Now I wish I had some work experience..

I have to say this will be an amazing experience! No matter what job you do, you will have to explain and convey difficult concepts to people, and even more so than usual if you are a lawyer, and that's one thing you can never practice enough at school. You could be a great writer, a great public speaker, but still you need practice in on the spot situations...Like, in no class do you ever get asked a question and be expected to have an answer right then and there...But in real life, this happens all the time.

And unfortunately even working with adults, there are people who you have to be patient with until they understand you...I am sure you will gain a lot from this!
