Ritz + Raw = Excellent Vet Report

I've been feeding commercial raw and frankenprey for just about four months.  I switched her to CR/raw because the only food she would eat was Fancy Feast Classic seafood (nine ounces) and 1/8 cup of TOTW dry.  I knew too much seafood wasn't food for her, and knew that FF was not a high quality food.  Plus she was always hungry.  So in desperation I transitioned her to raw.

Ritz is prone to UTIs and gingivitis; last May she had a dental cleaning (anesthesia, etc), at the ripe old age of two.

I had to take Ritz in to the vet in late October for a UTI, and told my vet that I was feeding her raw.  He wasn't thrilled about it but didn't react in horror either.

I took Ritz in to the vet today for a wellness check (rabies and Dist-Rhino-Calici vax).  The vet commented what great condition her coat was in to which I replied "yeah, good old raw".  I asked what about her teeth, and he said they were in great shape.  To which I replied, "yeah, she loves rabbit bone thank goodness because no way could I brush her teeth".  (Ritz hates being picked  up and tried to claw her way out of the cat carrier.)

The vet again said what great overall health Ritz was in.  I said towards the end that I'll give her extra raw chicken hearts today because of the trauma of going to the vet.

In another post about feeding raw and promoting this "controversial" subject, I was thinking that one of the best ways is what people are doing on these forums, telling us in real time, the agony and ecstasy of feeding raw.  And with our vets and other health care professionals, letting the condition of our cats speak for themselves. The proof is in the pudding (or poop).

What a wonderful report, Cindy!!!! That's absolutely awesome!! clap.gif

Yeah, with our vets, the truth is often spoken loudest through the cats themselves. Unfortunately, since cats fed a species-appropriate diet seldom - never? - suffer IBD, obesity, diabetes, urinary tract issues, etc., vets only see them once a year for their annuals! laughing02.gif

Well done to you bothclap.gif

Its a great feeling isnt it? My cat had his yearly check up last month with a new vet - we have moved countries. My Frenchman has been on raw for just under a year now. He is eighteen months old.

The vet said he was "text book" weight for his size and looked great. I had told him that he does not go out alone, but is harness trained. He wanted to know how he hunted as his teeth are so clean!!!!

Just like you, i said that he enjoys his bone in meals as part of a raw diet. As he had spent the check up saying what fantastic condition he was in, there was not much he could say to that....

Strange though that he knew that eating a hunted prey meal could keep teeth clean and healthy - maybe i have a convert???

Well done again, a glowing report from the vet makes it all worthwhileagree.gif

Cindy banana1.gifbanana2.gif I am SO happy to hear about Ritz!! woohoo.gif Excellent news. I, too, have one kitty addicted to Fancy Feast - somehow she convinced me of this last Fall - very, very finicky. Now we are transitioning to raw and she is giving me a bit of trouble but we are on our way. This is just great to hear and gives me hope for happy and healthy kitties clap.gifclap.gifclap.gif AND I do know what you mean, "the proof is in the poop" LOL LOL wink.gif

I was fortunate/blessed that Ritz took to Raw with very little problems.  Reading your reports along with Carolinas and LDGs, made me realize that.  And helps me not sweat the small things.
