Can i use the frontline plus for dogs on cats? is it the same? I have a 3 pack for dogs 23-44 lbs.. how do i determine how much per cat? I notice the little green container vial is the same size as a cat one but contains twice the amount of liquid..

You should really contact your vet to check the proper dosage before you try to administer the meds yourself. You have nothing to lose, a call to the vet is free.
Yes, I agree with this completely!

MY VET TOLD ME I CAN USE FRONTLINE FOR DOGS ON MY CATS.....BECAUSE I HAVE SO MANY CATS...IT SAVES ME MONEY...YOU GIVE THE CATS A REDUCED DOSAGE OF DOGS FRONTLINE...A LARGE DOG WOULD FLEA 4 OR 5 CATS DEPENDING ON THEIR WEIGHT...I HAVE DONE THIS FOR YEARS~ YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL HOW MUCH YOU GIVE THE CATS....

YES you can, but only with Frontline . I am a certified Vet Tech and I do it all the time. The dose for any size cat is .5 mls.  I buy a three pack of the extra larde dog size, then give my large dog his correct dose then the cats each .5 mls. In case you can't see it I am saying point 5 mls for cats.

The thing you CAN NEVER do is be using flea and tick spray, shampoo, and the like together or even in a two week period. That much will kill any animal. All the boxes say it has to be a four week period between doses if it happens to not work.  We tell our clients as long as it is Frontline or Advantage, you can give another in two weeks. JUst never with the other cheaper brands. I would say 95% of our clients have luck on the first try.

Good luck,

Yes, we use the Frontline for dogs too for them and measure it out. Been using it for years. Saves a lot of money, but one has to know how to measure it out correctly.

You can do this with Advantage also. I was told this was ok by veterinary staff.  Been splitting it up on my cats & dogs for years and have never had a problem.

Be sure to shake pipette thoroughly before drawing up each dose to be sure the active ingredients are evenly dispersed.  What I do is use the needle on the syringe to make a small hole near the top of the container and keep the pipette upright in the foil packaging to store it. Also, as far as the higher percentage of methoprene for the cat formula, it may be because cats' metabolism is different.  For example, you are supposed to give wormers like Panacur for 3 days in a row for dogs and 5 for cats.  (I rarely do; just give it again in a week, however, I worm everybody, from horses to dogs every 8 weeks and rotate the wormers. PS for anyone with Collies-don't use ivermectin related products for them and be sure your dog doesn't eat horse manure after they're wormed with ivermectin!).  The fact that the amount of methoprene is lower in the dog formula actually makes me feel better about putting it on my cats, as does the knowledge that they are only getting enough to work and not being overdosed.  Probably helps with limiting resistance in the flea population too, but I rotate between Frontline and Advantage to help with that.

Here is a link to a vet's website with more info:

The new package says don't use on cats!!! Did they change the formula? Is it still safe to use on cats?

They did that with the advantage too after I put it on my cats and it freaked me out!

Fipronil is 9.8% on the frontline labelled for cats, how much does the dog one have that you have now?

Frontline dose for cat 9 lbs + is .5ml.  Careful to not use more than this.

You can get a syringe with NO needle at a pharmacy for accurate measurement. Measurement marks are on the syringe so you can see how much you are drawing out.  Keep the extra Frontline solution in a small bottle with tight cap.  Some druggists will give you one free if you are already purchasing something else,

I tried Hartz brand on a cat once because it was cheaper and it almost killed it. It got all shaky and had trouble walking. Called the vet and was advised to give the cat a bath to try to get it off. He survived, but have used Frontline ever since.

Hello all - I know I am bumping an older thread, I just wanted to make sure this was still accurate?

I want to get some topical flea meds for my guys plus a couple outside strays I help care for, but the $$ really adds up.

Since I have Amazon Prime, I'd like to order from there as it saves me money and gets here quick!

I found the Frontline Plus for Dogs (89 to 132lbs) contains three 4mL applicators.

The ingredients are:

-    Fipronil  9.8
-    S-Methoprene 8.8
-    inert ingredients 81.4

The dog Frontline costs $42.    I have the needless syringes already, so is it still OK to give 0.5ml from the dog applicator to a cat?

I checked the Frontline Plus for cats and this is what they contain:

-    Fipronil   9.8
-    S-methoprene   11.8
-   inert ingredients    78.4
contains three  0.5 ml applicators

costs $31.99

So, as long as it is safe, I'd like to get the dog Frontline since I'll get so many more doses out of it.

The ingredients are exactly the same, although the S-Methoprene in the dog med is a little less, but I read the previous comments so I understand why that is.

Do you guys still think this is safe and OK to do?

I feel confident I can dose correctly, so I'm not worried about that part - just want to make sure this will not hurt anyone.

Thanks!

Yes, I have been doing so for about 3 years now with my bunch, and they are all healthy and flea and (for the most part) tick free.

I've had 2 ticks show up on my 5 cats in all that time, with Frontline Plus for dogs.

I highly recommend going this route.

Sorry to bump up this thread from my last reply a month ago - I just wanted to make an update and reassure any one who might ever come across this topic.....

As stated before, I had obtained Frontline Plus in the Extra-Large dog size  (89 to 132lbs)   off Amazon.

The ingredients are:

-    Fipronil  9.8
-    S-Methoprene 8.8
-    inert ingredients 81.4

I was worried about giving this to my cats, because it states on the package it is for dogs only and explicitly says not to give this medication to cats.   Which I don't understand because the two ingredients are exactly the same (actually, the S-Methoprene content is lower in the dog formula than in the cat formula).  I guess they just put that on there because they don't want people doing what I did - buying the large dog size and ending up with a couple years' worth of flea medication for their cat

I just wanted to report that I dosed all the cats with this medicine a couple weeks ago and everyone is doing fine!  No bad reactions to the product, and I'm pretty sure everyone is flea-free - I haven't seen any more itching & scratching!     So  I just wanted to share my experience that this seems to be perfectly safe if you are using that particular Frontline Plus product with those 2 active ingredients.

I used the dosing instructions posted on this site:

http://www.lisaviolet.com/cathouse/advantage.html

"If you're using Frontline Plus:

The amount of fipronil in the dog version is the same as in the cat version. The "Plus" is methoprene, an insect growth regulator. There's LESS of it in the dog product than in the cat product, so it's safe to use the dog product on the cats but do NOT use the cat product on a small dog.

The dose is 0.03ml/pound. A 10-pound cat only needs 0.3ml, not a whole 0.5ml. The largest Frontline Plus vial contains 4.0ml, that's enough to treat 133 pounds' worth of cats. "

Thanks for this information. Fleas are terrible here in Alabama. It's good to know I can buy just one product and use of my dogs and cats.
