Well, very surprised to see this on our guy this morning.  He's property of the office where I work but he's definitely attached to me.  He's quite the mouser so the warble thing actually makes sense although I hadn't felt any lump on him before (& he sits on my lap at least twice a day).  I've also been very diligent about brushing him; I use a Furminator.  Dropped him off at the vet first thing & she said it looked infected so they would have to sedate, examine, clean out and suture w/drain, then, antibiotics.  I saw some green/grey tissue within the wound & the first thing I thought was necrosis but perhaps that was just the infection.  I didn't see any object nor anything dead or alive inside of it & the vet didn't say anything about a bot fly or parasite.  It doesn't appear to be an animal bite since it's a single puncture and what really seems strange is the hair loss at the site -as if he was given a close shave- and that the hole was almost a perfect oval shape.  I'll update as soon as I hear back!

Hi Krazy Kat Lady,

My cat has had two abscesses that look identical to the one on your kitty. Both were on her back end, about the size of dime, and I was looking into her body as I looked at the hole. I just recently moved to Texas, and the first time it happened, I was staying with a friend while I looked for apartments. Naturally, I freaked out, but my friend happened to have some homemade calendula oil which has antiseptic and healing properties. So while I was freaking out that night researching vets in a completely unfamiliar city, she calmly suggested dabbing the oil on the spot to help it heal in the meantime (she seemed to think it was a spider or insect bite). So I did, and by the next morning, the wound had already started closing up. Three days later, it was completely closed up. By that point (I was dabbing her twice a day), she had wised up and started running as soon as I came at her with the oil. So my friend said that it can also be taken internally, so from that point on, I added it to her kibble as she loved the taste. So that took care of it. She recently got a similar abscess now that we live down here in Texas, and I treated it the same way. She's back to her usual self. So just a thought, if you want to go the homeopathic route. Hope your baby is doing better...

Hi Anna, sorry to hear about your girl's situation. Hope she's better now. Our boy is fine now. The vet told me that there was a lot of dead tissue she had to cut away(what I initially suspected) & that the wound went very deep. Whether that was really necessary i don't know but highly doubt they would've just arbitrarily done that (for the $$) but what do I know? In any case he seems perfectly fine now. Vet said she has seen similar cases where an abscess forms undetected beneath the surface of the skin and then bursts open (much like a sinkhole in the ground). He's indoor/outdoor so we regularly keep up w/his shots & parasite checks. He's a tough lil guy. Take care!

Yes, she is fine now. The calendula oil took care of it, and she's back to stalking birds (from afar) and bugs. Glad to hear your kitty is doing well. :)

Definitely looks like a puncture. Should be cleaned and an antibiotic ointment applied like neosporin. If it gets swollen it should be lanced and antibiotics given orally which usually requires a vet or someone with experience and supplies.
