I had to stop in at PetSmart today to get some things and, of course, stopped at the adoption center. There was this adorable big, black boy in one of the cages. He was so sweet and friendly, came right up to the bars and would let me pet him. When I stopped, he'd put his paw through the bars and paw at my glasses until I started petting him again. I wanted to bring him home so badly, he reminded me so much of my old cat Stanley, although he was a bit bigger and much younger (this cat was 1-2, Stan was 8 when I adopted him). I checked out his adoption paperwork "just because" and he can't be around other cats
He was being fostered with someone and wasn't getting along with their cats, so I suppose that's why it says that. It doesn't matter anyways, Leiki absolutely hates every other cat she's met and I don't have the space here to do proper introductions.

Beside him there was a 5 month old kitten. He was a brown tabby, but he was very strange looking. His body was big and round, not fat or like he had worms... just kind of round. His legs seemed shorter than normal, not Munchkin short, but not normal either, his tail was also quite a bit shorter than normal too but, again, not Manx short. He was just odd looking, lol.

I felt so bad about both of them, I wanted to bring them home so bad but it's really not a good idea right now.

On the plus side, Mike was talking today about getting a cat when he moves to a proper apartment and said that I could help him find one. We're going to look for one that would have a compatible personality to Leiki so that when we move in together again they'll have a better chance of getting along (we'll be renting a two bedroom apartment then, so we'll have the room).

Where my cats are
Aww!  I absolutely cannot go by the adoption center!  Before we adopted Mooch and Noodles they had a cat named Tinsel there; which was the name of my first kitty ever.  I still think about her!  And once shortly before that DH saw a cat there he was talking about.  That was before he knew he is a cat lover.  It's bad enough for me when they have the dogs up by the front door on Sundays!

I was online trying to find the rescue that had them at the store I was at today so I could show Mike the funny looking kitten and the big guy. I ran across one of the other shelters and saw that a cat we had been considering before getting Leiki was still at the rescue, it's been almost a year. In our defence though, we did contact that rescue and they wouldn't adopt to us because one of our dogs isn't neutered (he's a show dog, he can't be neutered).

I am so lucky ours don't have dogs or events with dogs (or maybe I just always happen to miss them). I'm a sucker for them, especially dachshunds, and there are two at our Humane Society now. Thankfully, they have to be adopted together and that would put me over the limit (and I can't afford it, lol).

I usually scan Craigslist Pets every night here in NYC seeing if there's any good deals on secondhand kitty things... but I always end up looking at pictures of kitties that need homes and getting depressed. I just got done doing that before I came here and read this post!

I get heartbroken everytime I pass by the babies at the Petsmart of Petco.  I don't feel comfortable donating by credit card when it asks, since I don't know where it's going, yet I'll always hand over cash to the kitty caretakers...  I usually try to donate a few dollars directly to their care, or I buy some toys on clearance and ask if I can give them to them. Most of the time, the workers are very amiable, especially if there's someone stationed at the adoption area.

But yeah. I want to save all the kitties everywhere. I feel your pain.

I think Mike would kill me if I adopted another cat right now... not only because I can't afford it but because he's eventually going to have to live with it again, lol (assuming that we stay together, lol).

I was actually pretty surprised that he said that he wanted to adopt a cat when he gets a real apartment, he's currently renting a room and the place isn't pet friendly. I think it will help him a lot, he'll still be able to stay over here some nights like he does now and not have to worry about being home to let a dog out. It'll keep him company and give him something to take care of, something to be responsible for. He's had cats before, we've had two since we've been together (Stanley and Leiki), he was always very good with them. Although he didn't spend too much time with Stan after we found out he was sick (a few weeks after adopting him) because he didn't want to get attached since we knew Stan was going to pass away in a matter of days/weeks (I spent every second I could with Stan, Mike didn't ignore him or swat him away or anything like that).

I'm on Kijiji here all the time looking for discounted pet stuff and I always end up in the free pet section... it makes me feel horrible! I would love nothing more than to live in the country and have a sanctuary for all the unwanted pets. I would have a small insulated shed at the end of my laneway with crates and cages of all sizes so people could just dump their pets there if they didn't want to actually bring them up to the house. I'd have two heated buildings with enclosed runs, one for cats/small animals (split into two rooms of course) and one for dogs. I'd fix them up and adopt them out if people were interested, otherwise, they'd have a home to stay in for as long as they needed it. I would rotate the animals between the house and the heated buildings, so everyone would get to experience "home life" every few days/weeks.... I could go on and on! Unfortunately, the only way that would happen would be if I were to win the lottery.
