Lucas has problems urinating:( stress? uti? crystals in urine?

Ok , as you all know I've been through a lot with my baby Lucas, with his Lupus, food allergies and trying to get him to eat raw.  Well, now he as problems urinating.   I'm taking him to the vet today, the sun hasn't come up here in Puerto Rico yet, but I'm awake, couldn't sleep thinking about my boy.

I wanted to take a urine sample because I know he urinates in the morning, but he didn't want to pee in the litter box that I prepared for him, he started screaming, so I just gave him back his litter box and he urinated just fine, a good, normal amount and all.  But after that he kept coming in and out of the litter box and urinated just a tiny bit each time.  I don't know what this means, I don't know if it is an infection or he is blocked, all I know is I"m very scared because since Lucas is allergic to all kinds of commercial food, he won't be able to eat the special foods that help with urinary problems.

My only options is to find a good canned food he can eat, becaus after this scary problem, I don't want him eating kibble, ever!  None of my cats.  Of course I will continue to try giving him raw.

Sometimes I think that me trying to give him raw stressed him and maybe that is the cause  of all this, but I also know it could be an uti or a blockage.  I know most of you think it isn't stress, but I know Lucas and I know how stress affects him and how nervous he gets by the  minimal change.

I will be updating soon.

I feel for you - I have just been through this with Bonaparte. He has had to be deblocked three times in the last six weeks, and then last Friday finally when he blocked again they operated on him to clear his bladder of stones and gravel. I am still awaiting the lab results so we know exactly what kind of stones he has, which will affect what he is allowed to eat. Meanwhile he is on Royal Canin Urinary diet which is available in both wet and dry forms.

If Lucas is peeing then at least he is not entirely blocked. Maybe there is irritation in the bladder or urinary tract, caused either by stones or by infection. I am sorry you are going through this - it is awful to see your cat straining and in pain, and I kept imagining how awful it muust be to want to pee and not be able to. Good vibes that the vet sorts it out quickly.

Thank you so much and I'm sorry your Bonaparte has gone through all that, poor baby ;(  Lucas does pee and he doesn't look like he is in pain at all, but this is not normal.  He keeps going to the litter box and looks like he is trying and trying and just a little comes out, but there's times when he pees normal.

I've been also thinking how awful it must be, not being able to pee and I'm in pain myself, seriously!  That is the way my brain works, it always happens to me.  I suffer like it is me.

The frequent squatting is because the irritation or pain makes him feel like he has to pee, even when his bladder is not full.

yeah.gif It can be hard to tell if the bladder is full - or if it's empty and painful. Either way, I'm sending vibes! vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif

My male ragdoll had crystals in his bladder. Providing him with fresh water, wet food and a dry food called SP helped.

Boat loads of vibes, prayers and hugs today, Tammy. Waiting patiently for your update laughing02.gif Lucas is very lucky to have such a wonderful momma loving and caring for him. You really are amazing through all of this with your boy. It has not been easy - to say the least. It does start making us physically sick when they are so sick. I know what you mean hugs.gif You are doing the very best you possibly can for him - nothing but the best agree.gif

Update:

I just got back from the vet and I have to say I feel a little relieved.  The vet checked Lucas and touched his belly and said it wasn't full or hard, and he also said that Lucas didn't react like he had pain when he pressed the bladder, which is good.  He said he doesn't think Lucas has a blockage and he doesn't think he has an infection.   He asked me if Lucas has been under stress, because he has a male cat that goes throught the same thing everytime he is stressed.  The vet already knows Lucas and knows how stress affects him.  I explained to him how I recently started trying to get him to eat raw food ( he got mad, he is totally against that , he told me lots of negative things about it, but I knew he was going to say that), anyway,  I told him that Lucas was a little stressed about that, and he said that might had cause the stress.  I also told him  I  have to try it because Lucas is  reaction to all the commercial food,  so he told me to cook it and I said yes so he could just be happy.

He gave him an inyection that reduces the inflamation and ordered a urianalysis.  I couldn't collect the urine today,so I will do it tomorrow.  It is important to see how is that urine.

He also told me that Lucas should be on Prozac because the stress affects him so much, but I just don't want to.  I could do it if there is no other choice, but for now, I will try to help Lucas other ways.

Lucas was sooo happy when we got home!  He hates going to the vet, even though the vet is so sweet with him, he adores cats, in fact the vet and his wife sleep with their four cats on their beds.

I just hope the urianalisys doesn't have any surprises....

I am so glad Lucas will be better cross.gif
Do you know what injection he took? Hopefully not Metacam? cross.gif
Yes.... a lot of vets are against raw, which is really quite sad.... They just don't know enough about it..... Sad thing is, commercial diets cause SO much problems to our babies - UTIs, diabetes, cancer, IBD.... the list goes on and on..... Then you have a diet where there is no proof that anything goes wrong.... pets do really well..... yet they are petrified of the unknown dontknow.gif Such is life frown.gif
Be aware Tammy, that when you cook the meat, you are destroying all the nutrients on it - your meal will no longer be balanced - you will need to supplement it with vitamins and minerals.... You can certainly feed him a home-cooked diet; I am sure it would help.... but it would not be nearly as complete and balanced as a raw diet. Would it help with his allergies? I am sure it would, as you would be removing the rest much the same way. Would it be nutritious? Probably not.... I don't know much about it.... I think you need to research about that..... I guess short term is aright? dontknow.gif
I highly doubt that the stress of him eating raw caused this..... highly doubt it....
I think it is much more likely that it is either a coincidence or the stress of the allergies itself....
I am not sure how he was put in a schedule - that can be stressful too..... But trying to make him eat a raw diet - that I can assure you, you can put your heart in peace..... it was not it.
Please, do not let your vet make you feel any guilty because of this....
I know that when things like these happen, we tend to look for answers everywhere...... And sometimes we just blame what makes sense to us.... The easiest thing to blame.
But really, a lot of times, there is just nothing to be blamed - it just happens.
Lucas has a compromised immune-system. Like Bugsy, like Chumley, like Pipsqueak.... things just happen to them - sometimes we can explain why, and sometime we can't it just "is".
You are working very hard to take care of your boy momma.... you are doing everything you can.....
Now take a deep breath...... Reset..... And let's start over, one day at a time, one meal at a time....
We are all here for you, full of love and care, for both you and little Lucas grphug.gifheartpump.gif

Well - - this is good news. And Tammy - if it is a bladder problem - it could be related to his high strung nature and due to him getting stressed out about things. Not necessarily the raw food - but just a compiling of other issues regarding his health. Just trying to find the best diet for him is stressful too, I am sure. agree.gif Pipsqueak gets very, very stressed so easily - he is the soldier.gif and guardian of the house. I have noticed that when something goes haywire at home - he does go to the litter box more frequently. Also - this has happened twice in the last few week's - explosive diarrhea after a stressful event - such as the two dog's last night fighting over a bone rolleyes.gif and Pipsqueak got in on the fight too. Then later he went to the litter box and had very bad diarrhea. So far today - all better. My point with this - is that I have a very high strung kitty too and stress can bring on bladder health problems sigh.gif I do have an anti-depressant that I can use again if I choose. It is called Elavil. It helps calm the cat just enough AND also makes them retain their urine a bit longer and that in itself helps heal the bladder wall of irritation. Elavil is used all the time for Feline Idiopathic Cystitis. It worked very well for Pipsqueak - but did not resolve the blood in urine. It did stop the frequent trips to the litter box so that was a great relief on his bladder. BUT first we have to see if Lucas has crystals of some sort or if the urine contains blood. If there are crystal's then that is a different issue than what Pipsqueak has.

Hang in there, sweetie hugs.gif I know this is just tearing you up inside. But try to just take a deep breath and calm yourself. I find that Pipsqueak knows when I am upset too and that bother's him so that won't help matters sigh.gif You have to TRY to act happy and act NORMAL laughing02.gif - Not easy right now - I know. vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif

Thank you both so much Carolina and Lauren:)  I know the vet is wrong about the raw, I just told him I was going to cook it so he could stop lecturing me, he knows nothing about cat nutrition.  It could have been that I caused him stress by pushing Lucas so hard.

No, it wasn't metacam, no way!  I'm terrified of that.  I  know it is bad for cats.  I don't remember the name I have to look in my papers, but it wasn't metacam.

That is what the vet told me Lauren , that Lucas could have Cystitis.  Isn't it awful how much stress affects out babies?  It is soo sad.  Yes Lauren, I think the same thing happens with Lucas, I think he is affected by my own stress, they are very perceptive our lil babies.  I hope we can find the way to help them.
