My cat is living under my bed.

I rescued a cat on Nov. 4th.I named her Lucky.  She was wrapped around an empty food dish and looked like a walking skeleton with fur.  I brought her in and fed her.  I had my vet come to my house and look at her and give her some vaccinations.  My vet thought she was only 8 months old because she was so thin.( I had to rush her to a Humane Society vet in december because she was ill.  That vet found Lucky was akready fixed so is probably older than 8 months old). Before the vet came, she was out with the rest of the animals(2dogs and 1 cat)  After the vet came, however, she has started living under my bed. She comes out to eat, drink, and use the litter box.  I take her out and she runs right back under.  I try to play with her and she acts like she doesn't know how.  I know it is not good for her being under there all the time.  I don't know how to get her out and stay out.  She also does not want anything to do with the other animals.  can anyone give me any tips and help me get my cat out.

My fudge was like that when I got her and I from experience I would just give her time, make sure she has food and a litter tray nearby and has time to come out to eat and use the tray alone and I know in time she will come out and adjust to her new surroundings. It is frustrating,Fudge was a bit better after a couple of weeks but she is a very nervous cat anyway and doesn't roam around the house much in general unless she feels safe so it also depends on the cat and when I got my new kitten Angel she did exactly the same and of course having a kitten you want them out and to play with them but I was told on here to be patient and it did pay off,she come out after a few days and now she loves running round the whole house.x

It sounds like pretty normal behavior for a new kitty to hide and try to find a safe comfort place in a new environment. My kitty last year did the same, hid in the closet for pretty much 24 hours and then I found from her previous caretaker she liked to play with a certain toy, so I got it out and within a week, she slowly trusted me and came out to play...now she is very playful and rarely hides at all.  Give her time and let her slowly gain confidence in a new environment, perhaps entice her with some treats or some toys - but probably most important is give her time and maybe even the space to let her come out alone to explore her surroundings. Best of luck.

my kitten also lived under my bed for the first two weeks or so that I had him (He was a rescue and had been feral). He was pretty lovey in that you could pet him and he would purr, and he would play with toys under the bed or come out to swat at string but then would run under the bed again if anything startled him.) It took a little over a month before he completely trusted my husband and I (and probably about six weeks before he was comfortable in all the different rooms of the apartment (as opposed to using the bedroom as base camp). It's been two months now and he's super sweet and very loving and you can pick him up and he's very gentle. (He's still shy around strangers though).

I got some great advice on this site at the time I was trying to get him acclimated to us. Basically, leave him be. Don't force him to come out. Just hang out in the room and talk quietly with him and give him treats and toys and lots of patience. If he has a favorite toy, try and find out (try strings or long teaser type of toys or even those little fake fur mice - my cat's favorites). I know when I first got my kitten, the foster person gave me his brush, which she said he loved. and when he was first nervous around us, I got out his brush adn he immediately recognized it and came up to get brushed and started purring. After that, though still timid, he realized we were "OK".

When did the vet come and check her out? You mentioned you got her November 4th, and I was wondering when this behavior started and if she was out and about for weeks, or just for a day or two.

I adopted a kitten that had just been rescued from a kill shelter..I made the mistake of introdcucing him to my house and other cat too soon..first few days lived in the laundry room so I put his bed, food, water and bed in there..then, one day while I was out he had moved upstairs under my bed...so I moved everything into my bedroom..he would let me pet him while under the bed, he would play with a toy too..if I came upstairs and he was out he would go under the bed..after a few days I realized he was using the main litter box in the hallway so I knew he was venturing out..finally about 2 weeks later I was downstairs and lo and behold, here is is coming down the stairs with my older cat..from that point on I had him eat downstairs in the kitchen with the older cat but kept my distance..slowly but surely he warmed up to me (Im talking 6 months) and now he is as friendly and loving as the older cat..give it time..
