Can L-Lysine cause bowel issues?

I started giving Monet between 500-1000mg of L-Lysine a day, starting on saturday night to boost his immune system a bit and hopefully to help his ringworms on his ears.

I just noticed that his anus is dripping brown. The smell of it tells me he'd need to be expressed (which I will do when I get home from work and give him a bath at the same time to clean his ears).

Could the L-Lysine cause this? I am not 100% certain if it's diahrea or the need to be expressed, but either way, could L-Lysine be the cause? It's the only thing different that he's been getting. the only feces I see is pretty normal, but I am not sure if it's Monet's or Cassie's.

thanks in advance!

If you are giving the pure powder, it shouldn't...... If you are giving treats, I am not sure what is them and what too many of it could cause..... Now if that's anal glands.... then nothing has to do with it really - he will just need to have them expressed agree.gif
IMHO 1000mg of Lysine for something that's not herpes, is not necessary nor will make a bit of a difference..... I wouldn't do it - that's not going to work IMHO.... That dose works on herpes flare up. Sure, L-Lysine is thought to help boosting the immune system, but giving him a greater dose IMHO will do no good if you are not dealing with herpes - Lysine is quite specific, actually....
I would just keep him going on 500mg a day.....

I am breaking up the pill and putting it in his food.

I am going to reduce it to 250mg.. maybe I am giving him too much. thanks for the post :)

In humans L-lysine can cause stomach pain and diarrhea.

In cats

I would stop the lysine completely until everything is back to normal and then start with a very, very low amount (no more than 50 mg)  and try to build that up very, very slowly and carefully over time, watching to see when it is that kitty reaches the point that signals the optimum intake for him.  The amount he can still comfortably tolerate, that is.
