I have two male cats both neutered..one is 4 the other just over 1...I had the older one first and introduced the younger one in April..they get along great...eat together, sleep together a lot play together all the time and clean each other...what concerns me to a degree is this...theo older one, when ever he gets a chance will sniff the younger ones butt...not just his butt but his butthole...under the circumstances is this normal behavior?

Hi there!!!!! Nice to see you posting clap.gif How is Dexter? I am still so happy he has such a great, loving home biggrin.gif. Ok on your question. YES.... Normal behavior. In fact, some cat's will walk behind their housemate with their nose up where the sun don't shine. laughing02.gif Sniffing has many meanings. Feral cats do this to actually find out what their friend has been eating believe it or not. It tells them about food availability laughing02.gif Our house cat's do the same thing. A lot can be found out about the cat's health status too. It is how they introduce themselves in a friendly manner. And even more silly to us, it makes our house cat's feel comfortable that all is well at home if everyones butt smells ..... Well.....normal bluelaugh.gif. It is a wonderful thing for our kitties to do but for us greenbarf.gif.... bluelaugh.gif. Give Dexter a scritch from me rub.gifwavey.gif

Yep it's normal.  Just like dogs do really.  They have glands back there that give off different scents; so that's what he's checking out.

I have problems after I bring my cats to the vet because they come home smelling different.  In a cat's eyes; it's like meeting a whole different cat even though my 2 girls are litter mates and almost 7 years old!  I've even had trouble when I bring them both at the same time.

Now if I'm correct a sick cat will also give off a different scent; but I think if that were the case your other kitty would be more reactive to him instead of just checking him out.

Aren't you glad we don't check each other out like that? wink.gif

ok, thanks for the reply...Dexter is doing great..totally acclimated to the house, me and my son..will come on the couch, snuggle against me and fall asleep and will even let me hold him like a baby..he's still a little skittish now and again, especially with sounds from outside..I couldnt be happier with him...

Cats can be weird about sniffing. One time, my older cat was standing on a shelf and my younger cat came up and sniffed his butt so hard, he pushed the older cat right off the edge.
