pooping outside the box,

First, I love the new site.  To the ones that made this up, congrats and thank you very much.

Well, we up to 8 cats now, a new one came today, about 5 weeks old, in the weaning stages.  But she is not the problem.  We have an older cat, whom we call Mama.  She has no front claws (we got her that way, was his mom’s, who had her declawed as we would never do that)  She is about 9 now, perhaps a year or 2 older and has suddenly started pooped on the couch (thank you, I cover it) , the floor and the cat tree.

Has anyone had this problem before?  My husband stated he has seen this before with declawed cats.  We have mulitible litter boxes and we keep all clean with fresh litter weekly.  She is not sick, and comes up wanting attention all the time.  She loves sitting with me and is a good cat.

As for overweight cats, I have one, and am trying to figure out how to keep one cat from eating and still feed the others that need the food.  (sigh)

Thanks, and thank again for always letting some of us come in with questions when things get rough.

Marcia

Yes, declawed cats having litterbox issues is extremely common. I know you didn't do it to her hugs.gif But the pain from declawing can show up as a cat gets older, especially with the onset of arthritis, which is also common in older cats. Scratching in the box to cover up her poop is probably very painful for her right now, which is why she does it in softer places.

Have you taken her to the vet for an exam? If not, please do, and bring up the possibility of arthritis and treatment for it. Arthritis by itself is usually very easily managed with relatively inexpensive drugs, and may solve your problem.

Hi Marcia and yes, Welcome back to TCS clap.gif . Not totally sure this is due to her being declawed. If her nails were trying to grow back (yes, that is possible if the surgery was not performed correctly) I would think you would have had litter box issues long before this. I would agree with Katie and take Mama to the vet to have her paws and pads checked out. If it is an arthritic problem starting, there is a great product you can buy on- line called Cosequin or Dasuquin for cat's. It is for arthritis and joint pain. One capsule sprinkled on food once daily will help a lot.

She could be having other bowel issues though and only a vet could really tell you for sure. If she is older than you think, she really should get a senior blood panel done anyway. Hope you can find the reason for this sudden behavior, she might be trying to tell you something is wrong. Keep us updated wavey.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif
