I don't remember the dosage , but L-lycene from Petsmart cured Honey's eye infection in 2 weeks. She acquired it at Orange County Rescue.

Recommended dosage is always 250mg. 2x/day, for maintenance.
If having g an episode, it's doubles to 500mg. 2xs/day.
For as long as it takes to go away, then back to magntinence dosage.
This is very safe. Lysine in peed out, & that's why it's given 2xs/day.
When Angel was diagnosed w/ lymphoma & was getting chemo during his last two months in attempt to save him, the vet said we could keep it doubled for the entire time. It is to strengthen the immune system. It's completely safe , & did work for his eyes in the past.

The cat in the picture had this problem and the l-lysine did no good at all.  Towards the end of her life I used to wash around her eyes with a cotton ball and warm water.  It helped her a lot and soothed the discomfort.  She'd come up to you and blink her eyes when she wanted you to wash them for her which was several times a day.  She lived to be 18 years of age and had the feline herpes for the last few years of her life.  I hope this idea helps.

Hello,

My poor kitty has been sick with some kind of cold for almost two weeks now. I am wondering if it is herpes or something else. Both are vaccinated.

Both kitties started with only sneezing, never sneezing fits just multiple times a day enough to make me think " ok your sneezing a little too much" .

After about a week passed they both started with the head shaking, the older one had a little more runny eyes than usual ( they're both Himalayans) I took them both to the vet, ear swabs were clean. No fever. The vet put them on l-lysine.

Three days later the older one ( who about once a year gets an asthma/ allergy cough ) started coughing and you could hear the congestion. He also was swallowing a lot. I took him back to vet and he was given a steroid injection and antibiotic injection.

It is a week later and still little to no improvement. Cough has seemed to get a little less frequent, eyes are less runny. They both are now on amoxicillin .

Any thoughts?

I just feel so bad. The older one definitely seems under the weather. Still eats and drinks normally. No bathroom issues. The young one is totally fine, just still sneezing a little.

I don't know anything about measuring out powder amounts, as I have always bought capsules, (500mg.) & pulled them open & sprinkled 1/2 on breakfast, & 1/2 on dinner, when I had Angel.

Lysine is all the same. The only reason it would be labeled for a cat is if they added other ingredients for cats.  I always bought lysine for Angel on amazon. You will find the best prices there.

the "now" brand is a good one, & always a great price. (I have even bought their essential oils for myself).

Here is a list of the ones I've ordered from amazon before. It's my previously ordered list for lysine on amazon.  Hope this helps!

Awww, poor kitties.  If it's been that long, & still no change, I would give the vet a call again. If they just started the amoxicilin, maybe it just needs a chance to work.

I think it wouldn't hurt to get them on lysine. It will only help. It is to strengthen the immune system. In their case, because they are fighting something already,

I would go ahead & get them on the double dose of 500 mg./ 2xs/day. It sounds like they really need it. You can do that indefinitely, & it won't hurt. It's peed out, that's why it's given twice a day.

You can keep them on that until it's good & cleared up, then reduce back down to the 250 mg./ 2xs/ day.

When Angel was going through chemo, the vet asked if I had already doubled up his lysine for his immune system to the 500 mg. 2xs/ day, & I had. She said he could stay on that dose indefinitely. so, it is safe.

I wouldn't tell you that if I weren't sure.

I hope this helps, & I hope your kitties get to feeling better very soon! Keep me posted.

You can see the attachment I listed above for some good lysines on amazon.

All the link did was take me to the sign-in page for Amazon.   I use the NOW brand. I have a quarter teaspoon and an eighth teaspoon measuring spoons right next to the jar. Quarter teaspoon equals 500mg of L-lysine.

Luckily today we've had some definite improvement . They've been on the lysine for almost a week and a half, the amoxicillin for two days now, I have to believe it was the antibiotic that did the trick. Hoping for a full recovery soon!!

Thanks for the help!

@carspaw66, Sorry that link didn't work, but yes, the now brand is a good one.
I'm glad you were able to answer the dosing question. [emoji]128522[/emoji]

My 15 year old cat got a very bad cold about a month ago. Sniffling, sneezing, audible breathing and discharge from one eye. It's probably not surprising due to the fact my other cat has feline leukemia, is often sick and he grooms her often. The cold symptoms seemed to mostly go away on their own but then he sneezed blood. I took him to the vet and she gave him a long lasting antibiotic shot and some eye drops.

That sort of helped but he still had problems with his little eye and eventually he sneezed blood again. Back to the vet. She X-ray him to check for tumors and found none. His blood work was good for his age but he has low red blood cells, low platelets and somewhat elevated eosinophils. She said the low platelets could be causing him to sneeze blood but also suggested it could be caused by a polyp which would require surgery. She gave him Prednisone and I supplemented his diet with Braunschweiger for his blood. Some improvement but still lingering eye problems.

Then he started to get boogers on the side of his nose. I started giving him lysine and the boogers went away but still having problems with his one eye. So I started researching and decided to try Calendula. It's said to have antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. I searched and searched and finally found it in the loose spices at the local natural food store. I couldn't believe the price, only 19 cents for about an inch worth in a baggie. I made some tea with a half cup of water and a sizable pinch of Calendula. After just a few applications with an eyedropper and some I've given orally with a syringe, I found the eye to be dryer and when he did get discharge from his eye it was a lot less crusty and more like normal tears. He's still getting some crusty but not nearly as much. Much easier to clean off his face. A few days ago, I gently massaged a bulging spot over and between his eyes and there seemed to be quite a bit of edema there. Shortly after that he sneezed blood again but this time out of the other nostril and I went into panic mode again. I called the vet just before they were closing on Saturday. The vet at this point recommended a specialist. I can't afford that if there's any way possible to avoid it. Just to recap, at this point all she has tried is a long lasting antibiotic shot and eye drops, then prednisone and she's recommending a specialist. I'm not satisfied with that answer at all at this point. Then I discovered that after sneezing the blood, the edema in his face mostly went down so maybe it's a good thing?

So I've added some honey to the tea I put in his eye. It seems to be getting better, sometimes there's discharge and sometimes it's completely dry. His eyeball does seem to be off center as though there's some swelling between his eye and his nose but most of the visible swelling on his face has gone down and I wonder if the gentle massage just popped something that caused a little bleeding. I hope this ends well and I will have done a better job than the vet.

Now I see that you are recommending much higher dosages of the Lysine than I've been using and I will try that next. I found you can get powered Lysine at Powder City online. It's really cheap and it dissolves in water instantly and comes with a 500 mg scoop, so no guessing. I use a syringe to squirt it in both cat's mouth and neither one seems to object. In fact, the one with leukemia seems to beg for it, sometimes. When I gave it to my older cat, he licked the syringe afterwards. He objects to the oral calendula but not the Lysine.

I just hope something I've said will help someone else. :)

Hi, I'm sorry you & your kitty are going through this. Can you maybe go to another vet for a second opinion, before the specialist. I agree that maybe the vet should have known, or done at least a little more.

Maybe another vet will have more knowledge & you won't have to go to a specialist, but it may be inevitable. (I'd start saving up, if you can).

It's good that you researched the calendula, I hadn't heard that one before. I'm familiar w/ calendula, but had never heard of it being used that way.  I'm not sure about adding honey though, that kind of makes me nervous. Especially if it's not organic.  Colloidal Silver may be a better alternative, but again, you have to know what strain, how many ppm's, etc...

I'm mentioning  @stephanietx, & @catspaw66   to see if anyone w/ more experience can help you.

I wish you lots of luck, keep us posted!
