One of the first things I did when I got my Nook was to go to our library to put some ebooks on hold. I finally got an email yesterday, saying that one of my books was ready for download. I downloaded Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) and then downloaded my book from the library to my computer.
Right away I had issues with ADE. Adobe took my ID from work instead of from home. I was in a hurry and didn't realize that, so I had to deactivate my home computer from my work ID and then reactivate it, using my home ID. Didn't remember my home ID password and had to redo password. Got that done. Then I had to deactivate the computer's ADE. Um, how? I didn't know, so I had to do an Adobe chat. My wireless router decided to reboot during the chat and that kicked me off the net. (I really have to bite the bullet and get a new router!). CTRL+SHIFT+D deactivates ADE, for anyone who needs that little bit of information, BTW. Then I reactivated the software, using my home Adobe ID. (The reason I had to use my home email addy is because the library needs to use the same address as Adobe ID. You can bypass the activation and do it anonymously, but I didn't want to go there.)
I thought .epub books would be downloaded with the .epub format. Wrong. They're downloaded in .acsm format and have to be converted into .epub format. Nobody told me that; the library never mentioned that and I didn't know. I got the book transferred over to the Nook, but, of course, the Nook didn't understand that format. Back to the drawing board. I didn't know about converting the formats, so I spent quite a while trying to figure out what was going on. I finally started to Google all kinds of questions, from the .acsm format to the .epub format....and realized that you use ADE to convert the book. (Felt just a wee bit like an idiot by then.)
Got the book converted over and finally got it to show up in my ADE library on the computer. Then I transferred it over to the Nook. And couldn't find it on the Nook. I was all over that thing. Back to Google: Where are library books located on the Nook? Got that figured out and opened my Nook and started searching. And there it was. Bless Adobe chat people. And bless Google. If not for them, I'd still be sitting at my computer, cussing a blue streak.
And it ONLY took me? About 2-1/2 hours!
*sigh* (In my own defense, it wouldn't have taken that long, had I noticed that Adobe had take my work ID. And if my router wouldn't have started rebooting and kicking me off the internet. Darn router anyway.)
I still have four books to download, when they come into my library. I figure that the second time around shouldn't be too bad. At least I hope so! We're allowed five book in our waiting list at a time, so now I can add another book. I think that if I keep adding as I read, I should always have a book or two on hand for when I need something to read. And once I get the hang of all the downloading and transferring stuff, it should go a lot faster.
FWIW, the book is really good! Book of Days by James L. Rubart.
