Scratching & Pads

Ah, well of course. The day after I told my boyfriends mom that she didn't need to offer to get Ichi declawed because he 'wasn't a scratcher' I catch him starting to scratch and pull at the carpet...

So I am planning on investing in a cardboard scratcher but was wondering if there were any designs or any brand that people have had success with?

I keep getting drawn towards the multi-use ones. Where it's either a scratch pad AND a toy, or a scratch pad AND a bed. But all I really want is something that will draw him away from the carpets and if it just so happens, to be a toy/bed/whatever else companies can think of.

I've got one who prefers the carpet-covered scratching post and one who prefers the sisal posts on the condo. When I first brought Daymon home he wanted to sharpen his claws on the couch... it only took a few times of redirecting him to the scratching post before he got the idea. I think it's a matter of finding out what Ichi prefers, and redirecting him to something appropriate when he's scratching at the carpet. I know that cat furniture can be expensive, but I've got a scratch pad like this that both my cats like:

Also, I work part time at Ross... if you have a Ross store in your area, check there for a cheap carpet covered scratching post. I got one for around $15.

We pick up throw carpets on sale that have sisal backing and allow scratching on them. It's saved the Oriental rug in the living room.
