Our rescue siamese has had low-grade kidney disease for pretty much the whole time we've had him. Maybe a year ago he was also diagnosed with megacolon. If you know anything about the function of the colon, you'll see an immediate conflict: He has big problems with hydration etc... Anyway, we've kept his levels really good by giving him sub-q fluids daily and assorted other medicines to help with his various ailments. All this sounds over the top except that he's a really lively and smart cat and you would never think there was anything wrong with him if you saw him.

He's always had trouble doing number 2 in the box because of the megacolon and we've gotten very used to finding his turds all over the place -- amazing what you can find "normal." However, he has occasionally peed outside the box, something that's much more disturbing. But in the last few days he's picked a spot (on an antique rug, no less) and peed on it over a dozen times. Without a doubt the volume of pee is disturbing. But beyond that the fact that's he's doing it when there are 2 spotless litter boxes is even worse. Sometimes he sneaks away to do it, sometimes he does it right in front of us. We'll obviously be talking to the vet about it when he gets in but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this particular set of issues. When the megacolon makes him constipated he tends to pee outside the box but he's gotten a number of poops out today. We're really at our wits' end with this issue. He's the best cat in all other aspects. Ack!

Hello :wavey: Welcome :D. AWWWW your poor kitty and poor you :hugs: It is obvious how much you adore and love your kitty :heart3: and I hope you can get to the bottom of these medical issues.... I can surely understand your frustration in this matter. Yep, poops are much easier out of the box mishaps to clean up than pee :(. There are quite a few members here who know a bit about megacolon and related issues that come along with that. I am sure they will come along soon with some suggestions and information for you. A vet visit is definitely in order. I would also get a urinalysis done. The megacolon could very well be causing pain and stress which can lead to bladder problems too. Much luck for the vet visit and please keep us posted. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

I have a cat that has chronic constipation (never diagnosed as megacolon, however) and chronic kidney disease, so we give him sub-q fluids every other day, which, naturally, results in HUGE deposits of urine in the litter box.  I know exactly where you're coming from when you say it's amazing how you can get used to "finding turds all over the place and find it normal"
.  Happily, we've gotten Sven's constipation issue under control with Miralax, so that issue doesn't happen too much anymore.

Now, let's address the issue of the peeing outside the box.  First, as Lauren said, you need to have him checked out by a Vet, to make sure he doesn't have a UTI or something, then, VERY IMPORTANT, you need to get rid of the odor in that rug!  Since he keeps going back there, he now thinks it's ok to use it, since it smells like pee.  You'll need to get something specifically made to remove cat pee, like Nok-Out, and will need to find every place where he has peed and soak those spots or he will continue to pee there.
