I adopted a very sick kitten when he was only a few weeks old and nursed him back from a shocking URI. Because of that and his hydration he was always on wet food. He has recovered and been stable for a few months and gained all the weight he needed (he was originally 300g at a few weeks old when i got him) and is now about 4kg at 7 or so months.
Since I'm a university student I was just feeding him what was recommended on Whiskers (sorry you may not know the brands I'm from Australia), and soon realised this was way WAY too much - 2 to 3 packets of wet + 3/4 cup of dry.
When I went to switch him to premium dry food I realised that they recommended 3/4 of a cup daily with no wet food. I still want to feed him a bit of wet food because I think it gets him hydrated well - especially because of flare ups from the URI.

I purchased him Purina pro plan for kittens. I was wondering if royal canin is better than this, or advance. Or another brand that they stock in Australia.
Also what is the best type of wet food he should be having. I know Whiskers wouldn't be the best because its just from the supermarket. What about Dine?

Hope you guys know what I'm talking about. I don't seem to know any of the brands talked about on previous posts :)

No, I'm not sure of the brands (we do have Pro Plan and Royal Canin here but I don't know if the ingredients are exactly the same). For any food, you want to see several meat products as the top ingredients, and real meat is better than "meat by-products". I know the bags/cans there are labeled differently so it's hard to say for sure what a decent label looks like over there. And I think it's illegal to use artificial colorants in food there, but if not be sure to avoid those. I prefer to avoid wheat and soy, and minimize corn.

I don't know if better brands are available in your area. Do you have stores with a good selection of cat food? Pro Plan is mediocre, ingredients-wise, and somewhat overpriced for the quality, IMO. Corn, wheat, AND soy in the top 5 ingredients! Not great. But better than grocery-store brands.

I do think that cats should have at least 50% canned food, if at all possible. It's usually easier to find a decent canned food than a decent dry food. Look for no grain, or very little grain. There's no reason grains need to be in canned food.
