chocolate melatonin

Thread Starter

at some point in the night, my 7 month old kitten, Oliver, got on top of the fridge and knocked everything off of it, including some olive oil, and my bottle of mint-chocolate melatonin.  when I woke up, he was lapping up some of the oil and there were pills scattered on the floor and I'm worried he may have eaten some.  I know cats can find mint very enticing.  I also know melatonin is safe for them.

I worry about the chocolate.  I keep telling myself each pill has a tiny amount in it, but I'm neurotic and convinced he's about to die (even though he's running around happily)  and if I need to take him to the vet, I absolutely will, but money is tight, and my husband would be annoyed if I spent 100+ bucks there for no reason.

this is what I suspect he may have eaten:  http://jamieson.ewdemo.com/node/204  it lists the ingredients on it.

Please keep in mind, I am not a vet, and I have no medical knowledge, but according to the ingredient list, it has chocolate flavors, which is not the same thing as containing actual chocolate. Do you know how many pills he ate? I doubt a kitten would eat a pill (play with them maybe, and maybe  lick it if it smelled like mint). Also the amount in one pill would be really miniscule so I'd be more concerned if he ate a bunch.

I'd call your vet to be sure and just ask over the phone whether or not he or she thinks this warrants a trip to the vets. He or she will probably just tell you to watch for certain signs from the kitten (like vomiting etc).

I know i got freaked out last month when my kitten (same age as yours) ran up and stole a piece of "edamame nugget" I was eating, which contained some onion. He ate a very small piece of it and I know onion is toxic. He did end up vomiting it back up  later and was otherwise fine.

I'd call your vet jsut to get an opinion though.

I agree to call your vet for advise. If Oliver did actually ingest enough to harm him, he will get sick to his stomach and/or lethargic. Specifically ask your vet which symptoms to look for and when you would need to bring him in.

Chocolate is poisonous for cats and dogs, and there is no good antidote. If they get too much, they must essentially make it on their own, this way or another.

But it seems cats can endure some. I had seen many forumists  admit shamefully they give sometimes a little chokolate to their cats as treat.

Of course dark, high content dark chokolate is much more dangerous than say milk chokolate.. And milk chokolate is the most common, not many people loving the dark...  .

Something essentially just flavored with chokolate shouldnt be dangerous if he didnt ate a lot of it.

Of course, do phone your vet anyway. Even if you know the melatoning should be safe for them.
