Help needed with cat urinating outside box

Thread Starter

First post here.

I have a 8 year-old feline that pees outside the litter box.

Here's the thing....

She mostly uses the box.  It's just that 2-3 times a week she chooses to urinate outside of it.  I have had to lay down plastic all over my office.  At least twice a week I am wiping up her urine on that plastic.

From all the reading I have been doing on this subject I have come to a few ideas as to what the problem may be.....

1. First, there is another female in the house -- close to her age -- and they don't get along with each other. They often hiss at each other. I think it's jealousy over me.  For that reason, I am thinking the female is marking her territory.

2. I thought about some sort of urinary tract problem, but the fact she uses the litter box more than not makes me think this may not be a problem.  Then again, I am not an expert (which is why I came here).  I did take her to a vet two years ago, but the vet said her bladder was empty at the time so a test could not be done and I was too lazy to go through the procedures of getting a sample.

3. Her litter box is kept immaculately clean.  I clean it twice a day.  There is a chance the other female cat uses her box (though she has a separate one in another room), and THAT may be making the problem female urinate outside the box.

Her diet is strictly Meow Mix dry food.  She does not like wet food.  Will not eat it.  She does drink a lot of water, but then again, all our cats do.

She is long-hair.  She usually stinks rather badly at her rear because her fecal matter and urine get stuck in her hairy hind and under areas.  We try to keep it clean, but she bites when approached in that matter so it never stays completely clean.  I don't know if that contributes to her problem.

We got her from the local ASPCA when she was 5.  She is a bit of a crazy animal (though loving).  She'll suddenly scoot off, as if terrorized, when approached.  She would rather approach you then her.  ASPCA said she has a rough life prior to be dropped off.  Not sure if those behavioral problems are leading to the urinating.

If you have any ideas what is going on here please let me know.  Again, to stress, she has had this peeing problem for the 3 years we have had her.  She does use the litter box regularly, but I can count on at least 2-3 times a week where she will pee on the plastic.  I point and yell at her at times, but I doubt she understands.   If you think it's a urinary track problem, I'll take her to the vet.  Just trying to avoid the costs and the chance that her bladder will be empty and can't be tested.

Thanks in advance for the help

Hi Ron wavey.gif

She's very lucky to have been adopted from the shelter at that age. A history of abuse can explain her running away and aggression when you try to clean her up. Poor baby.

I'm afraid yelling won't help in this case. It's actually very important to stay calm and never give her reason to fear you. All it can do is increase her levels of stress and cause more problems.

She's 8 years old now, so she probably needs to be taken in for a general check-up anyway. FLUTD is a common cause of litter box problems, so I'm afraid there's no way around it - you have to get her checked for that and rule this one out.

Next, we need to make sure we're dealing with inappropriate elimination rather than with some form of territorial spraying. While this is a typical behavior for whole males, it is not rare for females to spray urine, and since you mentioned issues with the other female, this is something we need to look into. Have you ever "caught her in the act"? More about spraying vs urinating and how to tell them apart.

Litter box problems are best dealt with as soon as they start. We can try and figure this one out, but keep in mind this may not be an easy one to solve.
