Bloated devon kitten with diarrhoea...

Hello,

I have had my kitten Gloria since the 19th December so just under a month and after about a week I noticed she had diarrhoea. When I say I noticed I only really noticed because my other cat, Neko got it as well and it was pretty bad so before I had noticed Neko with diarrhoea I just thought hers was kitten poo which is a little more runny than adult poo.

I changed their food because I was feeding them both this stuff my sister had give me which had made her cat sick (I know stupid of me to feed them it in the first place)
Neko seems to be better now but Gloria carried on having the diarrhoea so I took her to the vets and he gave her an anti-biotic injection and told me to starve her for twelve hours then feed her boiled chicken.

So I did this and she seemed better with more solid poos for about two days and then the diarrhoea came back.

She has a hugely bloated tummy and looks pregnant (she can't be by the way as is only 16 weeks old and Neko has been neutered)

I have taken a photo which is on this url:- http://s3.amazonaws.com/data.tumblr.com/tumblr_lxnstfCICM1qer4pso1_1280.png?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAJ6IHWSU3BX3X7X3Q&Expires=1326413906&Signature=hEPpckZSX24Iw8M4ZG3kbDN%2BHns%3D

Could anyone help me because I'm out of my mind with worry.
She also seems very moany and lethargic compared to when I first got her.

Any help would be very, very much appreciated.

P.s I have been feeding both her and Neko dry go cat kitten food down all day and just her once in the morning and once at night felix good as it looks kitten.

I am over the top careful with her, more than I was when Neko was a kitten and wrap her up in little jumpers I've made for her from socks and put heat pads in her bed wrapped in blankets for her to sleep with so she doesn't get cold because of her very little coat.

So I am trying my best to be as good owner as I possibly can and I just don't understand why she is so skinny and bloated with diarrhoea. frown.gif

Hello,

Thanks for welcoming me smile.gif

Yes she has been he just gave her an anti-biotic injection and told me to starve her for twelve hours then feed her boiled chicken, which I did and she was better for a day or two then got bad again and now it's like water sometimes. frown.gif

I'm going to take her tomorrow again because I am neurotically worried! :/

This kitten needs to go to a vet and get tests going.....
I never seen bloating like that with diarrhea.... That's scary.... Please get her tested for the Corona Virus....

This is what I am concerned with: Wet FIP frown.gif
Quote:
What are the symptoms of FIP?

Cats that have been initially exposed to the feline coronavirus usually show no obvious symptoms. Some cats may show mild upper respiratory symptoms such as sneezing, watery eyes, and nasal discharge. Other cats may experience a mild intestinal disease and show symptoms such as diarrhea. Only a small percentage of cats that are exposed to the feline coronavirus develop FIP-and this can occur weeks, months, or even years after initial exposure.

In cats that develop FIP, the symptoms can appear to be sudden since cats have an amazing ability to mask disease until they are in a crisis state. Once symptoms develop, often there is increasing severity over the course of several weeks, ending in death. Generally, these cats first develop nonspecific symptoms such as loss of appetite, weight loss, depression, rough hair coat, and fever.

There are two major forms of FIP, an effusive, or "wet" form, and a noneffusive, or "dry" form. Generally, cats will exhibit the signs of the noneffusive form FIP more slowly than the effusive form. Symptoms generally include chronic weight loss, depression, anemia, and a persistent fever that does not respond to antibiotic therapy.

The effusive form of FIP is characterized by an accumulation of fluid in the abdomen, or less commonly in the chest. Early in the disease, the cat may exhibit similar symptoms to the dry form, including weight loss, fever, loss of appetite, and lethargy. The wet form of the disease often progresses rapidly, and the cat may quickly appear pot-bellied due to fluid accumulation in the abdomen. When the fluid accumulation becomes excessive, it may become difficult for the cat to breathe normally.

FIP can be difficult to diagnose because each cat can display different symptoms that are similar to those of many other diseases.

A positive test for the Corona Virus antibody will not give be affirmative for FIP - but the bloating is not normal..... There are tests that can be done from there.....

I am sorry to scare you.....
But please do not wait to take this kitten to the vet vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif

Hello and welcome! I agree with Carolina. The first thing that comes to mind is "Wet FIP" ... I had a kitten pass away from this. Your kitten needs to be seen by a vet ASAP.

Hi Sarah and Welcome to the site. I am glad you found us. hugs.gif I saw the picture and agree that this could be FIP. HOWEVER, has your kitten been dewormed????? Have you done a stool check? Did the vet ask for a stool sample? I am wondering if your vet gave you any advice as to the WHY your Gloria has such a bloated tummy. dontknow.gif If she has diarrhea, is skinny, and bloated - it could be worm's. Parasitic infections and worm's can cause liquid diarrhea and your kitten could also be dehydrated and need's fluids. Let's just hope that it will be something easily treated cross.gif Is there another vet you could try - I am only suggesting this because I am surprised that your vet didn't offer better options for you other than the antibiotic injection and starving her for twelve hours and feed boiled chicken. I really think she need's a bit more than that at this point. Please keep us posted and we are here for you agree.gifhugs.gif For Gloria vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif

Hello again,

I was worried about FIP as I had read about it on the internet when researching about her symptoms.
I even said to the I was worried about it being FIP or feline leukiemia (the only thing she hadn't been vaccinated against by the breeders)

He said he didn't think it was likely to be feline leukiemia or FIP and just said he thought it was a tummy bug of some sort.
The breeders were really thorough as well and gave me loads of paper work saying how to look after her and what injections she'd had and she has pet insurance from them too so it's not like I got her from really bad breeders who didn't care about their animals health or wellbeing.

I haven't personally wormed her, she was wormed before leaving the breeders but am worming both her and Neko today to be sure.
Am taking her to the vets open surgery later on today so I'll let you all know how it goes.

Thanks a lot for all your help and support.

Hello all,

I thought I'd come on here to update you all.
I took Gloria to my vets yesterday and he just gave her another antibiotic injection and said I had to get a stool sample off her.

But later on in the evening she was looking worse so I sent photos of her skeletal back to the breeder (who I'd been in contact with throughout the situation) and he arranged for her to be taken to the vets he uses as an emergency.

Initially they told me that it was probably nothing too serious but that they would keep her in and run some tests to be safe.
Then as I was on my way home the vet rang to say she had another chance to feel her abdoman when Gloria was a bit calmer and there was something that concerned her so she used a syringe and managed to get out yellow sticky fluid.

When she said that I immediately thought it's FIP.
She said they suspected it but obviously they can't be certain as there are no tests to prove it it is a process of elimination.

I have just been so devastated all day. I will be so upset if I lose her.

Neko is fine now touch wood. All his diarrhoea disappeared.
So fingers crossed if it is FIP that she has and he has contracted the coronavirus then it won't mutate.

Thanks again for all the information.
Hope all of your kitties are well.

Hello all,

Thanks for your kind words and good vibes sent. smile.gif
The vets keep ringing and keeping me updated saying she is eating very well and drinking amd running around and even that her stools are actually solid now.

But still they think that it is very likely it is FIP.
Just devastated absolutely. She's such an lovely little thing.

I am thinking the worst and then anything is a bonus really.
They have run tests but haven't got the results back yet as she was taken in on the saturday night so they couldn't process it all over the weekend and all that.
I just want to know now because I can't bring her home as if it's not FIP it could be something Neko could catch.

So sad that she might possibly have to spend her last days in a vets cubicle and not being loved and fussed by me.
Obviously the kindest thing if it is FIP would be to put her to sleep and not prolong her suffering. :'(

She is only a baby. It is so terribly sad.

Hello,

Just thought I'd let you all know that Gloria passed away early yesterday morning.
They still don't know exactly the cause of death for sure but it is most likely it was FIP.

So sad. Glad I had prepared myself for the worst though.

Thanks again for your help and support.
