Van der Sloot pleads guilty to Peru killing

Dutch citizen Joran van der Sloot has pleaded guilty to killing a 21-year-old Peruvian woman at his trial in Lima.

Mr Van der Sloot went on trial last week for the murder of Stephany Flores, whom he met at a Lima casino.

She was found dead in a hotel in the Peruvian capital on 30 May 2010.

Mr Van der Sloot is a suspect in the disappearance in 2005 of US student Natalee Holloway, 18, on the Caribbean island of Aruba. Her body has never been found.

Stephany Flores was murdered five years to the day after Natalee Holloway was last seen.

Well, finally! Last I saw, last week I think-he had told the judge (who should get an award for patience) he "Needed more time to think of his plea" 

 

My heart literally bleeds for Natalee Holloways family. I cannot imagine their pain.

They have another reason for pain this week, though it was done at her father's request: Missing Teen Natalee Holloway Declared Dead

Dave Holloway told the judge in September he believed his daughter had died and he wanted to stop payments on her medical insurance and use her $2,000 college fund to help her younger brother.

OMG so Natalee's mother paid him $25,000 in exchange for revealing the location of the body...How is that not enough evidence to bring him to trial for Natalee's murder? Ah they better get a confession out of him for Natalee's murder too...

Peru court sentences Van der Sloot to 28 years

A Peruvian court on Friday sentenced Joran van der Sloot to 28 years in prison for murder of a young woman he met at a Lima casino, even as the family of U.S. teenager Natalee Holloway sought to have him prosecuted in the U.S. over her disappearance in 2005.

The decision comes two days after the young Dutchman pleaded guilty to killing Stephany Flores, a 21-year-old business student.

The court also ordered him to pay $75,000 in reparations to the family of the 21-year-old victim. He said he reserves the right to appeal the conviction and sentence, the first ever imposed on him despite prosecutors' repeated efforts to prove he was involved in Holloway's apparent death on the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba.

Under Peru's penal system, Van der Sloot could become eligible for parole after serving half of the sentence with good behavior, including work and study.

The prosecution had sought a 30-year sentence for first-degree murder and theft.

At least he's been put in prison for the one murder. I don't know how much consolation that is for Natalee's family, but knowing he's in jail instead of freely living his life must be some comfort.
