Well, today has been quite the interesting day. I was off from work so I was able to sleep in this morning. It was so nice not to have to set my alarm clock last night! After catching up on some much-needed sleep, I logged on to Facebook and found myself catching up on the happenings in my friends' lives. And, just as a I scrolled down the page, I saw it! A picture of an adorable kitty. Now, I see cats day in and day out at work. I see photos of kitties on FB -- postings from local adoption agencies and humane societies. I get asked all the time whether I'd like another cat from clients at work who are looking to rehome. And, of course, there is Craigslist with its endless supply of ads for cats, kittens, and everything in between. But, usually, I pay no mind. After all, I was not looking for a new addition. No more pets for me. There is no room at the inn. Yeah...right...
As I scrolled down my FB page, I saw the picture of a precious black (with some white) kitty who was an adoptable pet at one of the local humane societies. It took me 30 seconds to know that that kitty was meant to be mine. And, with far less coaxing than I thought was necessary, my roommate said okay and I headed off to the shelter. Thankfully, the little guy was still there. As it turns out, he had been there for the majority of his life and was adoptable for 1/3 of their regular adoption fee. After spending some time with him at the shelter, I turned in my application and waited for their approval. In under an hour, I had met my new best friend and brought him home. So, even though it was unexpected, unplanned, and even unnecessary, I am smitten with my new cat. It was love at first sight!
"Wesley" (as he was called at the shelter) was born on 4/21/2011. He's just shy of 8.5 months old. He is a DLH with a gorgeous floofy tail. While he is mostly black, he does have a small white bib on his neck. When I first met him, I knew it was meant to be. Within 30 seconds, I had him lying in my lap while purring and kneading me. He is as sweet as can be and has such a loving, endearing personality. It amazes me that he is so comfortable with people considering he spent his entire life at the humane society. I've always been partial to adopting older cats, but I knew he was the right cat -- and, I have a plan for him. I'm hoping that he and my 2 year old kitty, Finnegan, will take to one another and be best buddies. Finn and my other cats get along, but he needs someone to play with and rough-house. I do what I can, but I can't take the place of another cat. And, I'm thinking that "Wesley" and Finnegan get on well and can be companions for one another. If it doesn't work out, I won't be upset. But, I do think this is a great opportunity for all involved.
For now, my new one is in quarantine. I'll be taking him to work with me on Wednesday to be looked at. Even if his exam goes well (which I anticipate it will) I will continue to quarantine for a while. I want to ensure that everyone is happy, healthy, and comfortable in their surroundings. Being in a new environment (and a home at that!) will be quite the adjustment for "Wesley." And, while my other kitties are laid-back and easy-going, it will take them time to acclimate to having a new cat in the house as well. I'm going to take it slow, but I think everything will work itself out as it is meant to. And, in the meantime, I am just going to enjoy everyone. I can't wait to get to know my little boy better and I look forward to watching everyone grow and change with this new addition.
Unfortunately, the humane society pulled the picture they had of "Wesley" as soon as I adopted him. Therefore, I don't have pictures quite yet. But, I will try to take some this evening and we'll go from there. I don't want to overwhelm my new baby so I will let him let me know if he's ready for a photo shoot. But, trust me when I say he is quite the cutie patootie! He's still on the small side and weighs just 7.9 pounds, but I'm sure he'll fill out in due time. And, rest assured there will photos of everyone forthcoming. In the meantime, though, I am open to any name suggestions you may have. I have a sort-of Irish theme going and also an alphabetical theme where my first kitty is "C"assidy and my last is "F"innegan. And, I have "D"elaney and "E"mory in between. So, I'm looking at a potential "G" name. Or, maybe a "B," But, truly, if you have a thought, please share it. I'm by no means sold on any name or theme in particular. Please keep the ideas coming!
I don't dislike the name Wesley, but I'm not certain it's the right choice, either. I've come up with some other thoughts on names -- what do you think?
Who knew today was going to be such an exciting day?! Yay!
