Hi! Just Joined and have question about a scratching post

Thread Starter

Hello all!  I just joined and need your help with a situation.

I have a 4ft tall 3 tier scratching post for my two cats.

It was originally covered in carpet, which they loved.

After many years, they clawed through the carpet to the post, so I had to replace it.

I used sisal instead of carpet, and now my cats won't scratch it.

The beds on each tier still have the carpet.

I have tried everything.  I put cat nip on the posts, attached a hanging toy on the post, played with them with toys around the posts so they had to claw at it.

Still.....I have only seen one cat scratch for a quick moment twice.

I made sure to praise and provide a treat.

I am hoping they will eventually understand and use it.

Any ideas would be appreciated.....I spent a FORTUNE on the sisal and really need to find a way to make this work.

Thanks!

You might try attaching a scrap of carpet to part of the post, over the sisal. I you're lucky they will start out scratching the carpet and move on to the sisal. Many cats love sisal once they figure out what it is.

Oh, and welcome to TCS! wavey.gif

My kitten has a sisal scratching post (which I never knew it was called, until I saw this post and googled what sisal meant laughing02.gif) and he loves it. My mom bought it for me this Christmas, and it was his first scratching post. She also bought me some cat nip spray. Before I sprayed it he had no interest in it, but as soon as I put the spray on it, he loved it. My mom just got the spray from a pet store.

And welcome to TCS!!

My 7 month old kitten loves his sisal scratching post too (it was his first post). He clawed it to the quick within a month and so I got a big cat tree with sisal posts he's starting on now (but he'll still go and use the used up sisal on the original post as well). I'm sure your cats will love the sisal once they get used to it. I'd try the poster's suggestion above about adding cat nip spray to it.

Where did you get the sisal?  I have seen some of it that has a strong enough odor to be detectable to me, so it's pretty strong.  That may be your problem.

A second choice would be some carpet scraps, usually available at any carpet store.  And just as an aside, many say that the best way to put the carpet on the scratching post is with the bottom of the carpet facing out.

Is there no way you can return the sisal one in exchange for a carpet one? Some cats like what they like and there is no changing that..

It sounds like she put the sisal on the old one herself, so returning it isn't an option.
